For those who have kids graduating this year from West Johnston. What do you think of the 10 ticket maximum for relatives sitting in the stands? That part does not bother as much as the request to turn in unused tickets so the school can SELL the remaining of tickets to those of us who have larger families that want to attend. They say it's to offset graduation expenses. I've paid taxes for 13 years to cover that.

It's bad when kids have to make a choice as to which family member (and I'm only considering immediate) can go or has to stay at home?

I have a large family too and when I graduated from High School we had to pay as well. BUT everyone didn't go like grandparents and such. Just mom, dad, & siblings. We videoed and then had huge party afterwards for everyone...no charge of course:mrgreen:. But if you have more than 10 peps between ma, pa, bro, & sis's ... pull straws.

As for the cost of Graduation... well, talk to the individual school for that. They're the ones who can either make it extravagant or low key. When I graduated...I know the home eco. classes made the refreshments for big events like that and it was figured into the home eco. teachers budget. And art classes made floral arrangements... again figured into their class budget. Shop classes put up the stage and so on.
I think our tickets were like 5 each at the door and each graduate was given XXX amount of tickets for family.

I had one graduate last year from West and this was not the policy then. Different folks running the ship now though.

I agree with it. You can only have so many people. If you left it open there may be 25 per family, it would get out of hand.

Sorry, but I agree with ten.....If one has more they want to invite, have a graduation party after.

I think the 10 ticket limit is a good number. If anyone needs extras PM me, we don't need all 10. You can "have" our extras. Maybe I should stand out front and scalp tickets for graduation to recoup "my" costs??

I have a problem with having to purchase the gown for graduation. Please tell me what makes a few square feet of material and a cap worth $80!!!!! When I graduated we rented our cap and gowns and kept the tassle. What happened to that economical idea??? And, please, tell me there is no profit to the school for that purchase????

And I'm with CRZY, I paid taxes for 13 years and sent school supplies in for just as many years. Someone please come pull the stick out.

My SIL goes to Clayton HS, I wonder if she got her graduation package. I was told by the school that each student was allowed 10 tickets also.

I thought that was alot also.

I remebered it was immediate family, parents and siblings only unless a grandparent, aunt or uncle was taking the parent's place.

And we rented our gown also. Boy, time has changed.

    :)

We only got 7 tickets when I graduated and we had to pay for our cap and gown . . . of course that was many, many years ago.

For the life of me, I can't see any advantage to buying the gown! Like where in the world would you ever wear it again? Halloween maybe????? We rented ours many years ago and only kept the tassle! The schools must be getting some kinda' kick-back or profit from this! It's ridiculous!!!! Mine won't graduate HS for another 4 years. Wonder what the cost will be then if it's $80 now. Guess I'd better start saving my pennies till then

Absolutely, start saving now....pics during the summer before senior year, cap and gown pics, invitations..........it has been a constant. Not to mention that you will have class rings by sophmore year and that UNREAL yearly charge for the yearbook. My yearbook cost $7 back in 1986.

If mine want a high school ring, they'll have to buy it. Most people wear it through their freshman year of college (the ring and the tassle hanging from the rear view are how you know they are the lowly freshmen). :) Wonder if you can buy the cap and gown for your first child and recycle for the rest? If you don't have the $$$, you don't get to walk??? And we just voted to give them MORE money...

Darn.. even in 1986 I paid $25 for my senior yearbook. Class ring was purchased junior year and was $100 and that was "lustrium" (silver), not even gold. Prom tickets were $30/ea or $50/pr. Cap & Gown... we didn't wear them, girls wore an appropriate dress of choice in white, and the guys wore white tuxes with maroon (school color) bow ties and cumberbuns. It was really very pretty and unless it rained, it is always held on the town green thats in the center of town. There were a limited number of actual seats for immediate family, but being on the town green there was plenty of hillside seating on the grass. Heck.. most of the h.s. student body for grades 9-11 went just to hang out and go to the reception afterwards at the Town Hall.

We bought the cap & gown 2 yrs ago for my son's grad. and I intend to reuse at least the gown and maybe the hat for my daughter in 2 more years. I don't think it was $80 when we bought it.

You'll be pleased to know that the "green/teal" used last year (daughter graduated) does not match the "green/teal" from this year (son graduating). Good Luck on it being the same.

When I graduated it was 5 tickets. That was Mom, Dad and very special people. Everyone had parties afterwards. There were plenty of pix for those who did not attend. Cap & gown was bought...stayed in the closet afterwards.

It was fun but not something we went to great expense for.

People! people! - you are missing a great opportunity. Can't we have the great graduation gown exchange....
I will be needing a cap and gown next year and I know a few others who will...So can't we buy just the tassel and cap ....

Hey guess what we can -I called and found out the scoop at least about West Johnston....

    Cap $11.00
    Tassel $ 7.25
    Senior fee $ 15.00
Victory hood that changes by year $ 10.00

Taxes, Shipping and handling for the above alone...brings it to about $55.00

Add the Gown and you have $80.00 total....

Gowns can be used from year to year if they are dry cleaned and fit properly and, of course in good shape. The actually gown only costs about $25.00 additional to the rest of the stuff.

If you contact Student Services at the high school they will gladly accept your donation of the gently used gown and give it to a student who has financial difficulty. THis way that student has to pay a lot less. They accept the hats too but most student keep theirs, plus they are harder to fit.

Dont forget the ring and 2 sets of pictures. The senior t shirt. an extra tassel, Prom, announcements and yearbook.

What is a victory hood? I didnt get one for him. oh noooooo.

    Please do tell.

I thought the 15 dollar senior fee is stupid. I will have extra tickets and I think it would be a great idea for people to donate the gowns. I think I will. If he doesnt want it.

Maybe his friend graduating next year will use it. watch them change the colors!!!!
