One of my dogs has dewclaws and I was wondering if many breeds have them, or only certain ones(like maybe Chows, Huskies, Malamutes, etc.). Just curious.
I thought they all had them. Shelby still has hers Some of the *working* breeds would have them removed, so their nails don't get caught on something. (I think) Zoo? LJK? Le? Anybody?
I believe every breed has dewclaws, but some have double, like the Great Pyrenees, Briards, Catalonian Sheepdog. . . I have heard of some breeds such as Saints, being born without dewclaws. . .I'm not positive, but think it is rather rare.
Maybe I am mistaken on what they are called or maybe he has double, they just looked different from my other dogs.
Ok, back from a job, was on my way out the last time I posted and couldn't take the time to pull any info up - here's some good info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewclaw http://www.dogstuff.info/dewclaws.html I didn't google double dewclaws, but there aren't too many breeds that have them. Oh and here is a page at the bottom, it has an illustration of double dewclaws http://www.briards-fr.com/html/standard/standard_en.htm
Thanks everybody. I was thinking of the ones on his hind legs; they don't make contact with the ground which I guess is what makes his look different to me.
