I don't think I'd plan a trip to these areas any time soon.

Violence in Nogales, warns U.S.; don’t change travel plans, say Mexican officials

<snip> On Tuesday, the U.S. State Department updated its travel alert for Mexico, adding Nogales to its list of places where American citizens should be particularly cautious.

The border city in the state of Sonora, along with Cuidad Juarez and Tijuana, are “among the cities which have recently experienced public shootouts during daylight hours in shopping centers and other public venues,” said the alert. The increased violence in these areas is related to Mexican drug cartels, which the U.S. said are “engaged in an increasingly violent fight for control of narcotics trafficking routes along the U.S.-Mexico border in an apparent response to the Government of Mexico’s initiatives to crack down on narco-trafficking organizations.”

In addition, the alert warned American travelers to be particularly cautious driving on Route 15, between Hermosillo and Nogales, where some U.S. citizens have been “harassed.”

Clash in Tijuana leaves at least five dead

Juárez travel: Visitors should be on alert

<snip> The U.S. State Department advises Americans to only visit legitimate business and tourist areas in that country, but stops short of recommending Americans stay away entirely.

But it does point out our sister city, Juárez, as a particularly dangerous place to visit in Mexico. That continues to be highly disconcerting. El Paso/Juárez is a major trade partner via the maquiladora industry, and both cities need the commerce as lifebloods to the economy.

But law and order is not prevalent in Juárez; the killers, robbers, thieves and kidnappers run virtually free. The violent gang war for supremacy in the illegal drug trade sends deadly ricochets into innocent bystanders.

Deaths by violence have surpassed 1,000 since January. Our Thomason Hospital has treated nearly three dozen victims, both U.S. and Mexican citizens alike. The U.S. State Department reports that 1,600 cars have been reported stolen in Juárez -- in July alone.

Nogales? Really? I remember walking around there alone as a 13/14 YO.
