Oh yeah! I knew I had seen the oval sign before, but it wasn't quite like the Rose's signs. It looked like some construction guys were working on the building a few months back but stopped... Thanks!
It looks like it would make a great general store by the looks of the building, the first thing that came mind was that would be a cool general store.
Mom would stop there on the way to the Clayton Pool to get snacks & drinks or on the way home to get stuff to fix dinner.... about 1978!
When I lived in Clayton in 90 they were open. They were the only thing close to a butcher shop. You could go in and order cuts to your liking and they'd have it ready in 5 to 10 minutes. I really missed that place after they closed. Parking was a problem. On a busy day the street was packed.
In growing up that was one of the places that guys always wanted to work when they were in high school. There and the Clayton Food Town. Craig
Looked like the Red & White in Newcomerstown, Ohio. Naturally the one in Ohio had the functioning hitch posts and water trough out front.
When did it close? I've lived in Clayton since '01 and I've often searched for historical information about Clayton. Outside of going to a library anybody have any good sites with pics?
Have you purchased "Images of America - Clayton" by Pam Baumgartner? It is for sale at the Library in Clayton. I should have mentioned that Pam uses a lot of Virginia Lee Satterfield's material in this book. Virginia Lee was a great historian for Clayton. She was "dgsatman" aunt.
Check out this website of Modern American Ruins It is kind of a shame to see many of these old buildings shuttered up. There are literally thousands of these examples across the United States. I found an interesting link to some of America's Modern Ruins. (Some of these pictures on this link are of some of the buildings still standing in Massachusetts such as the old Salem Jail Photos) Check out the link: http://www.oboylephoto.com/ruins/index.htm
I worked at the R&W from 91 to 95 while I was in high school, it was a great first job! I think they closed in 95 or 96 after all the tax problems.
actually I still live right around the corner I bought the house i grew up in from my parents. near the park
Okay - now I'm curious! I know who "mom" is but not "the normal one". I too grew up around the corner - up on Stallings Street. I remember when Mr. L. G. Godwin owned the store back in the early 60s - then all the other owners.
the store that was turned intro apartments? still there noone living in them or the house they tried to sell it but it willnot sell
