Does anyone know where I can find a good wooden dog house locally? I have not seen wood one in Walmart, Petsmart etc.

Search the classifieds and craigslist - you are sure to find somebody who makes them. Is your hubby handy? You could find plans online and build you own, as well.

I picked up one a few months back from Carolina Pet Supply in Garner. They had about 4 sizes.

Thanks, Hubby is handy but doesn't want this project! I have been watching craigslist. I will try Carolina Pet Supply.

Once upon a time there were some fancy schmancy, custom made wooden houses available at the Raleigh flea market.

I remember those, and he used to have the dogs name wood burned into a sign that hung above the doorway. One even had little night lights on each side of the door, like a little covered front porch area. He used to bring the big black dog with him lots of weekends too, and if you peeked in the doghouse, the dog was usually curled up in it.

    Wood dog house

The reason you do not find too many wood dog houses is because they are favorite spots for fleas unless you put cedar shavings inside to help keep them out. They also tend to stay wet too long and cause the dog to stay cold.
The best ones are the Igloo type dog houses as they tend to have a tunnel for the dog to pass into the interior and they can stay dry and warm in the winter yet cool in the summer.
Fleas don't usually inhabit vinyl/plastic dog houses but you should have straw bedding in the winter so the dog can stay warm.
    Hope this helps.
