Who knows something about paint?

I have a lot of cans of paint and stain in the barn that have been there for several years. A few are unopened cans, but most are left over from various projects. I'm thinking multiple cycles of freezing and thawing probably have not helped it any. How can I tell if it's still OK to use? Or should I just take it all to the landfill?

Paint goes on wet and eventually dries. And if you live in some small backwoods towns watching paint dry has become a sport :jester:

But I think if you take it to the dump you have to let the paint dry out first before you can do that, or so I have been told. But I have been trying to let some old paint dry out for over a year so that I could get rid of it.

Actually am auditing a paint laboratory this coming week - Automotive paint.

 

i have used paint that has been sitting for at least 5 or 6 years and was all good once you mix it up again and add a little paint thinner if needed.

 

That actually does look like good information. I guess I won't be in too big a hurry to get rid of it. Thanks!

Thanks, Kaci, that's what I wanted to know.

There is a 5-gallon can of Thompson's water seal plus clear wood protection, never opened, that I do not intend to use. Anybody that wants it can PM me. It says on the can not to use latex paint over it, and I'm darn sure not messing with oil base paint for my deck.

 

If no one has claimed it, we could use it for our new deck!! :lol:

 

You know where I live! It would be great for a nice wood deck, but mine is just pressure treated lumber. I'm leaving for church in a few minutes, I should be home shortly after noon. Do you still have my number?

Most paint stores sell a granular product that dries out the entire container for disposal within a few hours.
