I have been wondering something for a long time. Why don’t people want freedom? In this election year we hear competing versions of what the 2 major parties will do for you. It usually seems more like do TO you. Neither side ever talks about less gov’t, less spending, more of Your money in YOUR pocket.
What I can’t fathom is why so many Americans are so willing to relinquish their God given freedoms to politicians who care only about their own power rather than what is right for the country. Can someone show me where the Constitution give the gov’t the power to take one man’s wages and distribute them as charity to other people or worse foreign nations? James Madison couldn’t:
In 1794, when Congress appropriated $15,000 for relief of French refugees who fled from insurrection in San Domingo to Baltimore and Philadelphia, James Madison stood on the floor of the House to object saying, "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents."
-- James Madison, 4 Annals of congress 179 (1794)
Neither could President Grover Cleveland:
"I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the General Government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit."
-- President Grover Cleveland vetoing a bill for charity relief (18 Congressional Record 1875 [1877]
Does it not occur to anyone that for every program or service gov’t provides for you you have to give up some of your freedom for it? Why do so many of you believe it is the proper role of the gov’t to take your money from you at gunpoint and give it to your neighbor?
Lest you call me a GOP stooge, where does the Constitution give the President the right to spy on the citizens of this country without warrant or probable cause? Why does the right demand that the gov’t define marriage? Why is that the function of the gov’t and more importantly why is it their business?
Many people use the “general welfare” clause to justify all manner of extra-constitutional abuses. On that matter I defer to Jefferson:
Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated."
--Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Albert Gallatin, 1817
Both parties abuse the power we give them and so many of you have just given them the OK depending on whether your party is in charge. WHY???? Why are so many people resistant to getting back their freedom?

Sadly, many people do not care to pay attention to politics, so it allows politicians to get away with alot.

I love freedom, but I am also not so silly as to believe I can be an expert in all the things government can do, nor do I trust Corporate world to do most of the things my Government does.

I love my Country, I don't always love some of the things it does!
