Why no Foreign Car Dealerships in JoCo?

I've lived in JoCo all my life and have always wondered why there is no foreign car dealership. Is there some sort of law or other provision keeping them out? I believe a Toyota or Nissan dealership would make out well. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Maybe since their trucks are beginning to be comparable to Ford/Dodge/Chevy that will change? lol

Never thought about it, big. Having come from a little further south, we used to go to Sanford or Lumberton to buy cars...any cars.

Yeah really. In Smithfield/Selma you can't spit without hitting one.

If we have so many used car dealerships and one man operations why would we need new cars? Especially since most of the current ones you don't need good credit, anyone can get a car..:?

If I were a rich man I'd open a Toyota dealership in Clayton or Smithfield. But Deacon would probably keep anybody from starting another dealership anywhere in JoCo. I think I'll add that's clearly an assumption on my part and I mean no ill will ole King Speakin' Deacon. Deacon, bring the rice burners to JoCo!

I thought you were a rich man. Our friendship is over.
I had never given it any thought that there were no foreign dealerships. Maybe because I know I am not getting a new car. lol
    Now I am intrigued.

I think Toyota/Honda/Nissan control where a new dealership opens. They also probably have agreements with the exisitng dealers as far as how close they will allow a new one to open. Since Raleigh & Goldsboro had dealers 1st, that probably has always limited Johnston County from getting one.

All manufacturers (American and Foreign) control where new dealerships are built and yes all franchised new car dealers have protected territories where they have first right of refusal when a manufacturer decides to open a new franchise. Manufactures are not very anxious to open new locations in the present economy and current new car dealers are struggling to move the medal.
J&M in Zebulon and Universal in Wendell is an example as they had lawsuits several years ago because one of the Chevrolet dealerships was relocating out of downtown and out to the bypass and the new location fell in the other dealers "territory".

Hey biguncfan, me too. I have lived here all my life and never anything but Deacon Jones, Smfd Chev. But you know, a long time Allen Hyatt tried bring in some foreign stuff, but it wasn't cars. Hahahahahah.

Yep Mr. Hyatt.........lol. The old Smithfield Ford before him too also got into trouble didn't they? And I don't believe the distance has anything to do with it either. They have a Toyota dealership in Goldsboro and Kinston and they are closer together than Raleigh and Goldsboro. Lord knows the second or third fastest growing county in the state could maintain one. Oh well, I'm not in the market right now anyways. But in about two years, yes. Who knows what will be around here then.

BTW, could the Capital Jeep Chrysler Dodge place be in a worst location?

    foreign car dealerships

Yes, Smfd Ford saw some hard times. I think it is the location of where that was. They had to close down. Recently Scott Bachelor opened there and had to close down. I hope Evan's Tire don't catch the bad carma of that lot. Capitol JCD is in a bad location. I forget it is there until I have already gone past it. I am not in the market either, just bought last year, but since I drive a Toyota, go ahead and open up a dealership. That is if you can find any more land. What is even worse than that is the Ford place in Smfd on Booker Dairy Road. It is so off the beaten path, I don't know how they have customers.

Yeppers thats right most import manufacturers have mile limits how close dealerships can be and waht the population and income has to be.

Dealerships domestic were one on every corner. and most of the time now ford dodge etc are trying to close out some dealerships.

Theres an issue now with david oneal on capital ...well for him to have that dealership stay open i think they have to buy dodge or something. Other wise it may close. Problem is leith has dodge etc.

The manufacturers are leaning on dealerships to protect product lines.

Can't explain why there aren't any Toyota dealerships in Johnston county, but we did hear that Hendrick will be open up one in Apex (not JoCo) but it's closer for some of us. Fred Anderson wanted too but lost out to Hendrick. How soon this will happen, don't know.
