What else could explain these activities in our home? So, the other night my husband was checking on Old Baby before we went to bed. This was because the monitor was overcome by some sort of interference. We have used this monitor for 2.5 years with no issues in the past. Anyway, he goes to her room to check the monitor. It's plugged in, same channel. He leaves her room, and stands outside the door listening to her, and he hears all this rustling in her room. Then it comes under the door, whooshes past him, and drops into the toilet which is right next to her room. With a "plop". Like a drop of water. No lie. This is how it went down, he says. He comes back to our room, and the monitor still does not work! The other night he is watching TV, and the stereo switched over to Tuner by itself. So all of a sudden, music is playing while he watches TV. This has happened to me once before as well. In the past, he and my brother have heard cabinets in the kitchen in the middle of the night. I have heard/seen nothing. Of course, I don't sleep in the living room either which is where you would have to be to hear this. My brother even said that somebody spoke to him one night. I thought they were just making this up, to pull my leg. But, with events still occuring, and happening to my usually cynical husband, I'm not sure what to think. And the monitor was fine the next day, and we have had no more issues. Could there be a logical explanation?
cleo wrote One,maybe two alcoholic drinks to many   Good morning Screen Doors, you too Cleo j/j
Cleo, I know how you feel. Where we used to live, I would have my kids put all their toys away before we left to go anywhere. When we came back, their toys were back out on the floor as if someone had been playing with them. I know it sounds crazy but it happened. I know you feel like a complete lunatic cause so did I. And now where we live, we have a few interesting things going on. Banging, thumping and beleive it or not, I THINK I heard singing. My son came to tell me the other night that he heard someone "sigh" in his ear while doing homework. He NEVER comes to me with anything like that. I told my husband and he said he heard it too and thought it was me but I was on the other side of the room. I could tell you more, but some of the stuff is a little scary. I am not kidding here. I know you are not as well. If you want, pm me and we can discuss our stories. I have no idea what we can do, I have prayed over the house and it has worked thus far. But it was not an easy thing to get rid of.
Cleopatra, You should have your baby tested for epilepsy. A bit odd, yes, but some research seems to indicate that households which show signs of poltergeist activity tend to have one or more inhabitants afflicted with epilepsy.
From 1978 (when I was 10) until I married in 1989, and then again from 1995-1997 I lived in a very old mini-mansion that was built around 1900. From what we knew several people had died in the house, at the time the most recent was a doctor who owned the house before my step-fathers family bought the property back in the early 60's. But growing up in the house I know there were times when I would swear the house was haunted by a spirit. Never anything mean or too scary, just creepy. For example, If I was home alone and upstairs in my bedroom (we're talking about a 6,400+ sf house) I would have all the lights in the house turned off with the exception of my room. I would do that because if I ever heard anything to make me think someone was breaking into the house, or god-forbid in the house, there was no way anyone would get up the old wooden front stair-case without hitting creaks. From years of practice, I on the other hand, could run around that entire house in the dark and avoid every creaky step and floorboard. But, there were times when I KNEW all the lights were off, yet I would go downstairs and find an odd light on. Like a table lamp that I would never have gone over to and turned on as opposed to hitting the switch on the wall for the overhead light fixture. Remote lights in the basement would be on for no reason, like the small flourescent bulb in the old coal basement. On occasion the basement door would be open, and I knew good and well it was closed and the old-timey knob was turned to actually lock the door (like an old-fashioned dead-bolt). Also, to be sure the spirit probably knows where my step-father hid a small bag full of gold kugerans that were never found after he died. He hid them after he got them, and his only comment to my mother after he showed them to her was that he was going to hide them where she'd never find them. No one has ever found them...
The spirit world is always very interesting in many regards. The spirits are kind enough to heighten our intuitiveness with information regarding impending dangers or just general information about our surroundings. I’m a firm believer of spirits and how they interact with the material world. Some may say, have another drink! And some may say, Just say no to drugs! Well, some of my proclivities back in the 70’s could have fried some of the neurons as they connected to certain associated paths but, I have seen, heard, and felt too many things to disregard the spirits that I believe watch over me........ all of us! I think the author of this thread could have some poltergeist though. Still listen to them and see if they are trying to tell you something.....
Aren't poltergeists destructive? Usually, that's the description of a more frightening spiritual attack. We lived on a farm, north of Raleigh (it's probably a subdivision of McMansions, now)...anyhow, there was 'something' there, as well. Sounds of footsteps, cold spots, the usual, and also my mom had an old clock on the mantle. It's innards weren't connected and the clock didn't work, but it was old and cool looking, so it was 'decoration'. Once, I was alone in the house and that thing chimed. It happened to another family member as well, so it wasn't just me being hypersensitive... Can't explain it, but there are a lot more things that we don't know than things we do...
Not necessarily. Most are playful and some tend to play jokes on those that are "life enhanced". While some poltergeists jokes are occasionally cruel, and some even harmful, it is not what makes a poltergeist. In the loosest definition, you could say that a poltergeist is a spirit that interacts with the living. They are aware that they are on a different plane. If poltergeists are spirits of the former living, most have made peace with the fact that they are dead and have fun with it. There are a few, though, that resent their death and take it out on the living. Ghosts, on the other hand, are spirits that are not aware that they are spirits. They tend to "ignore" the living and even seem to be completely unaware that the curtain between the planes have dropped. Indeed, for all intents and purposes, ghosts appear as no more than a recording of the activities the spirit performed during their life. As my first post on the matter indicated, not all poltergeist activity is that of a spiritual nature. Many (but not necessarily most) occur due to psychokinesis, brought about (or activated) by a form of epilepsy.
Thank you Dr. Egon Spengler. I am a firm believer that the reason why I don't have these "things" happen to me isn't because I don't belive, but rather the "forces, ghosts, or whatnots" know that I will scare them more than they scare me. So they just staaaaay clear! ~
   Good one, Ken. Clif, you have any references for the study (studies?) that showed a correlation between poltergeist activity and epilepsy? I'ld love to see how they operationalized poltergeist activity. I'm also curious about what conclusions the researcher(s) made, because, as we all know, a correlation does not imply that there is a causal relationship. (Yes, I meant causal, not casual.) And how many times has the study been replicated? Replication, as I'm sure you are aware, is necessary for a finding to be accepted as generally true. Scientifically curious, Snuff
Hold on to your hat.. My mom kept children for years, including a little boy named Josh who was about 3 years old. Around his 3rd birthday, his mom began reporting that Josh was waking up with terrible nightmares, pointing to a shelf on the wall of his bedroom, and talking about a boy on the shelf and said that "the boy" was being mean to him and telling him to get out. She also reported that she was in the sewing room and had the toy box open for Josh to play in. The box, which had a lid that swung open 180 degrees, slammed on his fingers - hard. This went on for several months, and they ended up moving Josh out of that bedroom and into another room. The nightmares stopped, but Josh would not go near his old bedroom, which they had turned into a playroom for him. Shortly thereafter, Josh's mom showed up at my mom's house very upset one Sunday afternoon. She said that she was sitting on the living room floor going through some papers and photos and such, and that Josh pointed to a picture on the pile on the floor, and got hysterical, crying and screaming "it's the boy...it's the boy." Here's the clincher. Before Josh was born, the couple had a little girl. She had a terminal illness, and died when she was 8 years old. Most of her life, she had a shunt in her head and due to that, her hair was always very short - making her look a little like a boy. The bedroom that they had originally put Josh in, had been the little girl's bedroom. The toy box contained some of her toys that they had kept, and had put in the box thinking that Josh might like to play with them. Lastly...the shelf he kept pointing to in his bedroom at night contained knick-knacks and one stuffed toy. It was the favorite toy of the little girl, the one she had slept with every night. When she passed away, they couldn't bring themselves to throw it away, so they put it up on that shelf in his room. My mom told her that she didn't think Josh would be harmed, and his mom agreed, but they sold the house soon after, because they were concerned for Josh's emotional well being.
Okay Clif...you seem to know these things. Give me your take on this... When I was in my mid-20s, I rented a townhouse. Shortly after I moved in, I began experiencing the strangest things.... I had a regular overhead light, like most rooms in buildings built in the 70s, with the flat, round shade. I woke up one morning to find it hanging by the wires...plaster all over my bed. (Keep in mind I lived in a townhouse, no heavy-footed tenants overhead). The maintenance guys came and put it back up, but over a period of about 6 months, it came down an additional 4 times. Each time there was plaster all over, like it had been ripped down, instead of having "fallen" down. This always happened while I slept, and I never heard anything the nights it would happen. Also, I kept having a problem with my TV changing to "snow"...with some foreign language being spoken in the background. I would have to get up and manually change it back to the channel I was watching. Another thing that would happen is things kept changing place. I would set my vitamins out each night in a dish on my dresser with my jewelry to remind me to take them the next morning, and they would disappear. Then I'd find them in the weirdest places. I went to pour cat food into the cat's bowl one day, and out came one of them from the box. I also found one lying on the top of a stack of plates in the kitchen cabinet. One day, I couldn't find my address book that I always kept by the phone. I found it in the bottom of the linen closet, under a bunch of extra blankets. I also had a medicine cabinet in the bathroom that had sliding mirror doors to it. One morning, I had barely put my hand on it to slide it open (it glided open easily)...when it shot out of my hand, and across the room and shattered in the bathtub. The straw that broke the camels back was when I woke up one night and heard my cat growling in my bedroom. I turned on the light, and the cat was backed up into the corner, all puffed up and staring at a spot in the bedroom - growling like all get out. Next day, I went to the office and asked to move into another townhouse...that weekend. Funny thing was, they didn't ask too many questions and didn't put up a fight. They looked for a vacancy and I had my keys the next day to move into the new townhouse. They didn't seem the least bit surprised.
There could be...but who knows. That toilet thing is kind of weird. You didn't recently go see "Flushed Away" did you? Or maybe it's the spirit of some long flushed away goldfish? Seriously, it can be disturbing. Have you had your house blessed? Sounds a little silly, I know...but it certainly couldn't hurt. I don't think spirits are like lost puppies...they don't normally follow you home. But then again, if you were putting out a "sweet, kind mortal" vibe, you may have attracted a lonely soul.
Hey Magnolia, that lost lonely soul wanted to play last night. My alarm clock went off THREE times. I got up, hit "snooze" checked the alarm time settings, scratched my head, and went back to sleep. As soon as I got back to sleep, it went off again. I did not get back to sleep, the baby was starting to stir and I thought to myself, "If that alarm goes off again, she is going to wake up". Sure enough BEEP BEEP BEEP, I turn off the alarm, get the baby, and go back to bed with no other issues. My daughter has not wanted to go to bed for the past two weeks. I thought it was just a phase. We have to stand by her bed until she drifts off, and some nights she winds up in our bed - like this morning around 4am. Can't say I blame her, after all the racket in her room the other night.
I'm not saying there is a definite correlation, just that there are indications. HERE is a good link to get you started. You might try checking out the studies reported by Drs. William G. Roll and Vernon N. Neppe. Again, no one has said that there is a definite correlation, just that there may be a correlation, which requires further study. Basically it's a hypothesis, based on polls taken by those who have experienced poltergeist activity and those who have some form of epilepsy. I am far from being an expert on such things. It's more of an avid curiosity, coupled with an innate ability to research what interests me. In spite of kookookacho's vain attempt at humour, I don't really know anything, I just pass on what I read. I am one of those who wants to believe in the supernatural (spirits, esp, ufo's, etc). But, being scientifically trained, I can't help but accept that in many instances there are, shall we say, less mystical explanations to events. And so I research. I have also learned that, just because there may be an explanation that makes non-believers happy, doesn't mean that that is the only or even correct explanation. Like I said, I want to believe. I am desperate to find proof (not public proof, but proof to myself). But not so desperate that I am willing to reject "normal" explanations. All that having been said, your story is interesting. I would like to know the history of that particular townhouse.
Clif, does Psychokinesis have to be a symptom of Epilepsy or is it a way to explain away Parapsychology? What do you think of my alarm going off three times in a row last night?
It could be either. Like swamp gas as an explanation for UFOs, it may explain some events, but it doesn't explain all. Not sure. But the area did suffer some power outages last night. Did you? It might be an explanation (although I did see that you checked the settings). It's also possible that it was in a "waking dream" state that you thought you heard an alarm (but it didn't actually go off). These are possible explanations, but certainly not the only ones. BTW, since I have your attention, let me ask you about the house you live in. How old is it? Are you the first occupants? If not, do you know anything about the previous occupants? The reason I ask is that, from what I can see, most hauntings (by both ghosts and poltergeists) occur at a specific location due to the spirit staying at (or returning to) a familiar place.
No power outtages here. Everything was keeping time in the morning when we got up. I actually had to get out of bed twice to turn off the alarm last night, and check the alarm time settings. I used snooze, which normally gives us 7/8 minutes - the alarm went off again less than a minute later. The second time I did not get back to sleep, as my baby was stirring and I knew that one more buzz would wake her fully. The alarm went off again, I climbed over Hubby to snooze it and then retrieved baby who had fully awakened. After that, no more alarms. The house was built in 98, we are the second owners. The previous occupants had a new house built. Nobody died here.
