Hi folks, We are looking to go to Williamsburg next week for spring break. It's been awhile since we went - something like 7 years or so. We've just come from Disney in Januray and don't really want to spend a bundle on the different attractions. Advice? How much of Colonial Williamsburg can you see without buying a ticket? Last time, seems like there were several buildings you could visit and things to see without getting a ticket. Just want to make sure I'm remembering correctly. Also, what about Jamestown? That is another ticket but is it worth it and is it needed to see anything. Thanks in advance ( from a cheapy! )
I don't know if you are planning on camping or staying in a hotel ... but if you are planning to camp you may want to choose some place other than http://anvilcampground.com . They advertise being the closest to the parks ... but I wouldn't stay their again. They are no where near enough to walk to the parks. I didn't try the bus they advertise ... but it wasn't a bus specific to the campgrounds, I think it was the city bus. There was a pool & very small playground ... which was nice. But the major train track that is right beside the campground was very annoying. I was amazed that a campground could be built that close to a major track. The trains ran through regularly ... and they were close enough to cause our camper to vibrate. It was crazy. Starting fairly early in the morning, a train came through about every 1/2 hour. Only a couple of trains came through during the night. Luckily we were out exploring during the day & we were really tired during the evening so the kids slept right through the noise. The tracks close proximity to the sites seemed to be a safety hazard for anyone who had small kids who may wander. In any case, they campground looks like a wonderful place according to their website ... but my family won't be staying there again.
For camping, I would suggest the KOA (there are two right next to each other). They aren't walking distance to the activities, but they are nice, clean, and well staffed.
