I have Bellsouth DSL. About 2 months ago I connected my dsl to a Linksys wireless router for my hubby's laptop. We had no connection problems. Well over the last week I can only connect if I plug the dsl directly into the modem. When I try to use the router I cannot connect. I don't understand why it worked flawlessly for 2 months then all of sudden stopped working. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, we hear about more problems with BellSouth DSL than any other. Normally when this is occuring, it is best to start with everything back at initial settings. Give the following a try:

Here's what I would try - reset the Linksys router to factory defaults. Check in the documentation that came with it...normally there is a recessed reset button you can push to do this. Make sure you have it DETACHED from the Bell South DSL modem when you do the reset.

Once it is reset to factory defaults:

    1. Turn OFF your BellSouth modem.
    2. Turn OFF your Linksys router
    3. Turn OFF your PC.
    4. Connect the Linksys router to the BellSouth DSL modem with the ethernet cable.
    5. Turn ON the BellSouth DSL modem and give it time to start up and you have all "green" lights on the front of it.
    6. Now, turn ON the Linksys router and let it start up and make sure you get all "green" lights on the front of it.
    7. Now, attach your PC to one of the ports on the back of the router with an ethernet cable (don't want to start off with wireless...first confirm it works directly wired.)
    8. Turn on your PC and let it boot up, and see if you have an Internet connection. (If you had to login to the Linksys router and do any setup the first time, like entering an account name and password, do so again to make sure all that is correct.)
    9. If all this is working correctly and you get a connection through the router, you can then proceed to seeing if you can get it to work wirelessly.

Well darn that didn't work. Bellsouth won't help of course because I didn't buy their equipment. I just don't understand why there were no problems initially and now all of a sudden I can't use the wireless. Oh well... thanks for your input.

What Operating System are you using? Also post the modem model # and the router model #.

Also, have you run a spyware check? Have you changed the password in your router setup? Those Admin / 1234 passwords are well know to hackers and your wide open to misuse if you use the default password.

Post those model numbers and I'll take a look for you.

forgot to add that I'm using XP but I believe the other pc on my network is 2000 Professional and I have ran the spyware. I use adaware and spybot and I have norton which I ran 2 days ago.

When you login to the Linksys admin screen (through your browser) does it show on the status screen the IP number that BellSouth is handing off to you? I believe there is a refresh button in that area to tell it to drop it and pick it back up, which you might want to try also.

Not sure if this is the same thing but when I ran my wireless before through Windows ME, I had to go in several times reset the configuration through some run command that I don't remember. I've since switched to a new computer with Windows XP and I have to go in every so often in the Control Panel, go to networking, right click, hit repair I think it is and have the wizard repair the connection. Don't know if that will help but good luck.

DSL and Cable Modems both use MAC (Media Access Control) addressing. When working with Time Warner if you plugged a router up when your PC was hooked up, I had to have them reset (Or leave it unpleugged for 5-10 minutes for the MAC Time to live to expire. Unplug the DSL Router for 30 Minutes and try hooking up the Router again.
