Was the crime this person was wanted for worth the officer risking his safety and that of the public on the roadway?
I am not an officer so I don't know of his training or capabilities or what he was thinking at the time but the criminal should be looked at for additional potential manslaughter charges (their is a reason I am not a lawyer).
The person being chased may have only been wanted for a relatively minor crime, but may have been responsible for a lot of crimes for which there was no proof to use on further charges. I remember talking to a policeman once about a string of thefts and he knew who it was because the thefts started just after this person was released from jail and, as predicted, stopped when he was finally arrested again on another charge.
it rubbed me wrong this morning when the news said: the woman who hit the police officer "won't face any charges because she stopped and wait for authorities to arrive." Hello!? WHY would SHE face charges because someone ran out in front of her car causing her to hit them?? I love how they word stuff! LOL
I got caught in the shut down yesterday. They shut down I-40 in stages on back to Rock Quarry RD exit. We couldn't go any further than Rock Quarry. Four lanes of traffic mergin to get on one exit ramp...it was fuuuunnnn! Then everyone trying to get back on a route to get where they were going. Lots of back ups everywhere. Ironically a couple of months ago we were leaving Raleigh on I-40E. When we got to the Hammond Rd exit there was a man...in beggar type clothing...literally weaving in and out of the first two lanes. He was drunk and trying to cross I-40 at 4:45pm. I almost hit the guy. I had no where to go...I slowed down and prepared for the worst as he weaved out in front of me and then weaved back at the last minute. There is no room to go in another lane when cars are all around you. I called the police. It was not this guy who caused the chase yesterday. I never drive in the first two lanes of I-40 near that exit anymore...cause there is always someone at the bottom on East and West bound with signs.
Okay, since this is a topic I will weigh in. I AM a former Raleigh Officer and I can tell you that the Department has a really big book called the DOI, which is full of things that officers have done in the past that the department does not want them to do in the future. I can guarentee you that if chasing a suspect across a major Interstate is not already in the DOI it will be before weeks end!!!!
I said the same thing, when I watched it on tv yesterday! My thoughts and prayers go out to the officer and the girl who hit him. But, but..I would have never ran out onto a highway..I don't care who you are. Not only did the office risk his life, he did the girl who hit him as well. It could have been worse too. Rush
update on the officer Well found out tonight at work that he is going to be ok, well sort of..he has a rod in his leg, broken collar on one side and dislocated on the other side, bruised lung, and several broken ribs, and cuts on his face. I didn't find out about the girl that hit him, thought go out to both of them..I'm sure your right here, it shouldn't happen again, or at least I hope not! Rush
