Would you have yours drilled?

This morning my termite company called to say they wanted to come out and perform a "free" termite booster inspection. I wasn't sure what that was ... but I told them OK. So they come out, check out the house and say all looks well.... however, in order to keep my contract in effect I will need to have a termite booster applied and it will only cost $775.00. Our house was 5 years old in February. We've paid the annual termite fee ... but this is one of those cases where I guess my blond roots were showing ... I always assumed that the yearly termite service included some type of treatment to make sure we never got termites. I didn't realize that really they were just doing inspections not some sort of termite treatment. I was told that the termite control chemicals applied when our house was built have now expired and they need to drill holes around the entire base of my home and retreat it? I was also told there are a couple of different termite treatment options ... however, because they used the less expensive option originally, I can't use the same chemicals because the termites get immune to it? In the past, when I was out looking at prebuilt homes, I always assumed that if I saw holes drilled around the foundation that there must have been some sort of termite problem in the past. The termite inspector said seeing the drilled holes is a positive sign because it shows that the previous homeowners had kept up with their termite treatments. I've always had some type of termite contract on any home I've ever owned ... but this is the first time I've ever been approached about a termite booster. For those of you who have had their homes for more than 5 years ... did you have this done? Is this common practice? Is $775 + $125 annual renew fee a reasonable rate:?:

I would call Woods and ask for a second opinion, unless it was Woods that is!

We have used them for over 10 years and they have never tried this with us

I agree, we've been in our house for over 7 years and never had that happen with them. They ARE supposed to be treating when they come out, that's the whole point.

Not true. The annual fee is for inspection if you use Woods. All they do is annually check for termites. No treatment. Read your contract. Our builder selected Woods to originally treat for termites. After 7 years Woods charged us $695.00 to treat again if we wanted the keep the contract in force.

Question for you then, because I don't know where my contract is at the moment, I am sure I can find it but it's late and I don't feel like looking for it:

2 years ago they found a tube (evidence of a termite starting) under the house and treated for it for free, because that was part of my contract. If they aren't treating yearly, then why would they have done that? :?:

I don't use Woods, but the termite guy who inspected my home today said the yearly fee was for an inspection ... however, if during the yearly inspection they came across any termite issues, they would have treated the affected area free of charge while my home was under contract. I just always thought - probably mistakenly - that there was some sort of yearly treatment done wether there were termites found or not.

This is correct. I just had my house redone and they had to drill holes in the driveway and garage. No holes when we bought the house new because they treat the house during the building stage before the driveway and garage are poured. Our house is 2,400 square feet and it cost 610 bucks to redo it through a company in Angier.

I guess I will be calling them tomorrow, because I have been home most times they come out and it sure looked like they were treating it with something. :?

We had active termites last year in the attached garage of our 7 year old home. We selected the more expensive treatment for about $850 (1700 sq ft) that is suppost to last longer than the cheaper option that our house was treated with during construction. The chemical we chose is called Termidor. The activing was limited to one corner of the garage and it stopped after the treatment. We use Neuse Pest Control and I like them.

Well, you know this was "bugging" me , so I went down and found my bill.

The verbage states that the complete termite warranty protection provides the following:

    *Periodic inspections
*Retreatment of any areas that become infested with termites
*Repair of structural damages caused by subterranean termits (termite damage repair warranty only)

So I take it, they aren't re-treating each year.:? I guess I need to be asking them how many years before they hit me up for the big re-treatment? Or do we just keep going like this?

Thanks for the post Melynda, as I learn something new today too.

I have used Woods for over 20 yr's and been well pleased. They paid for repair of termite damage I had once. Keep your receipts.

The prices for yearly inspections and booster treatment posted earlier are in line.

no, we dont treat every time we come out. it is an inspection. if you are under contract then we will treat the area no charge. the chemicals do have a lifespan.
