    JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. --
Johnston County Elementary School parents will have a chance to learn more about the proposed year-round school calendar this month.

Tuesday night parents at East Clayton Elementary school will have the opportunity to discuss their concerns with school leaders at 7 p.m.

The proposed plan would offer shorter, but more frequent breaks between sessions and would only be implemented if parents at a particular school approve it.

School officials said one of the benefits is that it will help children retain more knowledge.

"It is a program that uses nine weeks on, two weeks off, nine weeks on, three weeks off," said associate Johnston County School Supt. Keith Beamon.

Beamon said some parents are concerned about how it will impact families with kids in both elementary and middle schools with two different calendars.

Later this month parents and staff at each elementary school will be surveyed about the new plan.

If a majority of the families and a majority of the school staff approve the change, then the school can ask the board to approve it for the 2011-2012 calendar.

On Thursday night parents at Four Oaks Elementary will have the opportunity to meet and learn more about the plan.
