Hubby just ran over a nest with his mower and was stung multiple times. He went back, located the nest but we don't know how to kill everything and remove the nest. Exterminators don't service for that. Help please!

Buy some wasp and hornet stuff, get brave, wait for late evening (when they are least active), and start spraying. The trick is to have two people with cans at the same time and bear down on the opening so they can't even get out. Soak that thing down real good and have a good sized brick or something to throw over it when you are done.

You may get stung once or twice, but this is way better for your lawn than gasoline or some other chemical.

I'd spray some hornet killer in the hole and cover 'em up with dirt or concrete!

    Oh the memories!!

I remember way back when I was younger, my brother, a neighbor and I were playing on a ditch bank. All of a sudden my brother said something bit him on his neck. I looked and it was a yellow jacket. I flicked it off his neck and BAM all of a sudden I was getting stung ALL over! The neighbor started getting stung multiple times and RAN with her bicycle to her house as fast as she could. My brother started running beating himself and I started running doing the same thing. I had them up my pants legs so I pulled my pants off and ran as hard and fast as I could up that dirt road. When I finally got home I was stung over 20 times. My face was so swollen I looked like the kid off that Cher movie Mask. Back then my parents didn't take you to the doctor unless you were half dead! So I went to school once my eyes opened up. I don't think I've ever been as embarrassed as that day.

I've always poured gas down their nests and that has always worked......every time.
    Don't light it.

Grew up on a blueberry farm that my parents still run today and there were always nests in the ground. To this day, my dad still pours gas down the hole at night and kills em everytime. As Clive said, you don't light it!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I called around and some exterminators were more than happy to come out and handle this, to the tune of about $200! No thanks. Hubby was going to try the gasoline but then between the rain and benadryl kicking in he fell asleep. I think we'll try it (without lighting it) tomorrow night.

Ouch -- I hope your hubby is doingg better. About two weeks I was getting out of my car to go berry picking and didn't realize a bee flew into my car and was sitting on my car seat so when I slid out, it nailed me on the inner thigh. OMG - you would have thought I had been stung by more than one. The pain was unbelievable and that was from just one. The area burned like heck and swelled up so bad. I finally took a Benadryl - worked great. I said to my hubby that I don't ever remember a bee sting feeling this painful and have never swelled like that before. I swear bee stings are more powerful now than they were when I was a kid.

All you need is 1 - 12 pack ice cold Bud Light, 1 gallon of regular unleaded, 1 Bic lighter, and 1 pair of nads.

Please be very careful of these bees. My son was stung last summer over 30 times. URgent care said next time we must call 911 b/c most likely next time he'll be allergic. Don't know how many times your husband was stung but be careful on the next time around as he may react worse. I've heard the gasoline thing as well but as everyone else said...don't light it--LOL. Those suckers are hard to find. Ground hornets go by vibrations approaching. Swarm up and sting. Hurts like he**. I got stung last year as we were tryign to get htem off my son. I can only imagine being stung over 30 times. One of the most horrifying things I had to watch. My thoughts go out to your husband. No doubt he's in pain. Good luck killing them all.

Don't pour gasoline on it. You'll never have grass there again not to mention your polluting the water table. Why do people think it is okay to pour gasoline wherever they see fit? I guess it is okay if you would like to drink it later on (well water / water table).

a cup of gasoline is not going to contaminate the water table. and you act like "we" just go around dumping gallons and gallons straight into the city storm drains.

the grass might die and not come back this season, but it'll be back. about 4 years ago, i hit a nest in the middle of a big bed of yellow bells i've got. the nest was within a foot of the bases of the yellow bell plants. the grass in a small spot around the opening died for sure, but it grew back the next season, and the forsythia were not affected....

Gee..............I guess DH should have left the nest alone in our yard last year, huh? :? It's either gas that will kill them, or chemicals that might or might not. I'm highly allergic and I'd prefer that they die than me. The grass is just fine, and so is my well. A little common sense goes a long way.

Let's have a buzz killer party (lol-couldn't resist that!) I'll supply the beer and pool to cool off in after we get these pests taken care of.
