If one of you computer gurus had to buy a tower and had up to 800.00 to spend on it, which one would you get and why?

I'm a bit worried about the new Windows Vista, have heard it's a PITA, but that's all that is available with new ones, correct?

I need to bite the bullet and get a new one and have about 3 weeks to decide.

Thanks, in advance for your 2 cents!

Plenty of options out there and depending on what you need may spend as little as $300. Don't have to get Vista though. All depends on what you want it for. For me I would probably buy in order. Dell will give you an option without having to call. I would think about trying Linux before hand. You may like it and realize it will fit your need. It can be as simple as putting a cd in trying it out. Many people realize they do not need a new computer once they get a real Operating System.

If you do go thru Dell, you can still get XP thru online ordering. When you are at the page for Home/Home office desktops, on the right side you will see an XP image to configure one with XP.

Me personally I would build my own. Here is what I would buy.

    I would go to CompUSA...

Buy a tower of your choice.
Buy an ASUS mother board that supports Pentium 4 and above
    Buy SATA HD's
    2 gig ram

I could build one hell of a mchine for 800.00.

Ditto on that!! If that's for the PC only, no screen.

    A really decent $800 machine:

    Asus P5NT-WS Motherboard $250
    Intel Pentium D 940 3.20GHz $90
    ZEROtherm / CF800 CPU Cooler $20
    XFX GeForce 7600 GS / 512MB GDDR2 / SLI / PCI Express $130
1 GIG OCZ Special Ops XTC DDR2 667MHz Memory $50
    Western Digital / 320GB / 7200 / SATA-300 Hard Drive $80
    Lite-On 20X SATA DVD Burner $40
Diablo ATX Case with 450Watt Power Supply, Front Neon Lights, Front USB and Audio Ports $30
    Win XP Home $95

And if your not a graphics nut you can get a cheaper video card and add another gig of ram.
