I'm thinking about getting a laptop. Now that VISTA has been out for a little while, have you heard of any major problems with it? Security holes you could drive a truck through? I've heard some old software doesn't work on it. True? How about Office Suite 2003? Quicken 2005? I know a lot of you prefer other operating systems rather than windows, but I'm kind of a TechNoNot, not sure I want to try to learn another OS. TIA for any advice.
Desktop publishing; accounting; trying to get into web design, if I ever get SharePoint figured out. Not into gaming, although my daughter thinks I should try WoW. I already spend way too much time on blogs, etc., if I add gaming, I might never see the light of day again! One reason I'm thinking about a laptop is for liveblogging events like the upcoming Navy OLF hearings.
Have been told that Vista does not allow home networking. I think this was the basic home edition and if you want to do home netowrking then you need to go up to Vista Platinum or Vista Business Premium.....just what our tech guy told me this week.
I am not sure about Quicken but I do know that Quickbooks 2006 and older will not work with Vista and they have no intension to make a patch for it. I use Quickbooks for my business and I recieved an email from them saying that they want to keep me as a customer but if I want to upgrade to Vista I would ahve to buy Quickbooks 2007.
The Intuit Way Every year they come out with new products. Every year I look and say, nope don't need the new version as they did not add anything that benefits me. Guess if you don't want to upgrade you better look into the Virtual technology and run a virtual XP to get your quickbooks. Personally I went the other way and sought a solution that did not tie me into their revenue stream.
It's not lacking security by any means!!!! It's a P.I.T.A. when it comes to security. I'm in there with Ken, I'm not touching it till the first sevice pack. If your buying a new laptop and the option is there for Vista then I would take it. Just make sure you have at least 6 months of free software phone support in the warranty. Also, I always tell my laptop customers to buy the extended repair warranty. Even if you only choose the 1 year extension plan, you'll be glad you did. If your buying a used laptop don't even think about loading vista, even if it has the "Vista Ready" lable on it. If you have the model numbers on the laptops your looking at, post them here and I'll give you the scoop on good/bad info.
Thanks, Dan! I would not even think about "upgrading" an older computer to VISTA, but I'm assuming that if I get a new one, it will come that way. I've been looking on Dell's web site, but I might shop around for a refurbished laptop, instead. Still in the "thinkin' about it" stage.
Or if you are willing to call them they will sell you one with XP/XP Pro installed instead of Vista. Craig
Good luck with that. Vista resembles older versions of Windows about as much as a decent Linux distro.
DS, who you know is a total computer geek, has Vista and Linux both running - will ask his advice and let you know what he says tomorrow. i am so computer illiterate and this kid is hardwired for computer genius:lol:
A friend of mine just recently picked up a laptop with Vista and she says she hates it. Vista keeps booting her from the internet.
I've had several people come to me that purchased laptops running Vista. They were BEGGING me to remove it. The only problem with doing so, is finding all the hardware drivers for another OS.
A guy here where I work got a new laptop with Vista on it, suffice it to say, it will be at least a year before I attempt it, he's been on the phone for untold hours with various help desks for the software we have to use. What a nightmare......................
I bought my kids a laptop for Christmas that was Vista ready and applied on line to get the software for it rebate thingy and it was so complicated I never could figure out how to redeem the dumb thing. So I don't have Vista installed on it, and from what I'm hearing here I guess it's a good thing that I'm totally computer illerate!
I have been testing Vista in a test environment. So far it does not work well with roaming profiles. But neither does XP Pro. Nor AD in General.
