The House has passed a bill that would allow governors to order federal facilities in their state to lower the flag to half staff to honor fallen troops, the Army Times reports. The bill passed the House 408-4, and now goes to the Senate.
I can't remember the last time I saw a flag at full mast in Michigan, everytime I am there, which is all to frequently, I see this unfortunate sight.
KD, Without reservation, I support our military. In this case, I object to having this authority delegated, because there would seem to be no rhyme nor reason as to how an individual governor could decide. I would hate for the lowering of flags to half staff to become any more politicized than it is now. Suppose the governor of one state decided to lower it for his pet's funeral. What then? I agree that this is unlikely, and that the public outcry would be resounding. Moral suasion, however, neither prevents nor precludes inapproriate actions by those who lead. Count me as obstinate about the US flag placed at half staff for those whose service is in the military. I do not feel that as tragic as the VT killings were, that flags should have been lowered, as eventually, the flags will remain at half staff for any or no reason at all. In my mind, I hope and pray for the day when I will no longer have to see a flag at half staff, becasue I'll know that our military people are no longer in harm's way, making the ultimate sacrifice for this nation.
The bill does not say governors can order flags at half staff for any reason, it says to honor fallen troops.
I stand corrected, and apologize for hip shooting before I completed my boresighting. Respectfully, Carl
I think it is the least that can be done to show any small amount of respect for these men and women who gave their lives for us.
i agree that something should be done for fallen troops. i just dont think a flag at half staff is the answer. remember, these troops voluntarily signed up. now if a dignitary or someone like that was killed then yes, aka ronald reagan.
yes they signed up because they are brave people .If they did not sign up who would fight for our country?I think anything that shows that they are respected is a good idea .
WS, if not for them, who will defend the country? Many on this board have stood our watches. I interpret your remark as smug and insulting to those who have served and those who continue to serve.
Warning: Thread Drift! How about a 3.5% pay increase. I'm for it. I would even give up a tax cut to pay for it. Certain other people don't agree. http://www.armytimes.com/news/2007/05/military_payhike_whitehouse_070516/ Troops don’t need bigger pay raises, White House budget officials said Wednesday in a statement of administration policy laying out objections to the House version of the 2008 defense authorization bill. The Bush administration had asked for a 3 percent military raise for Jan. 1, 2008, enough to match last year’s average pay increase in the private sector. The House Armed Services Committee recommends a 3.5 percent pay increase for 2008, and increases in 2009 through 2012 that also are 0.5 percentage point greater than private-sector pay raises. Bush budget officials said the administration “strongly opposes” both the 3.5 percent raise for 2008 and the follow-on increases, calling extra pay increases “unnecessary.” There ya go. For all the Administration talk about "supporting the troops", those brave people aren't worth a 3.5% pay increase. If I were a Congressional Democrat, I would pass the 3.5% pay increase through congress as a stand-alone bill, and dare Bush to veto it.
We Democrats welcome recovering Republicans. In fact, the Democratic Women of Johnston County have a meeting tonight, want to go with me?
