MY DVD/CD-RW Drive on my laptop seems to have died. When I insert a CD or DVD in al it does is make a sound like it is trying but nothing happens. I have tried to trouble shoot it with no luck. Nothing bad shows up on my device Manager either. Anyone else had this problems? Any suggestons on where to go to get it fixed?
It would help if you post the manufacturer and the model numbers off the bottom of the unit. Post the operating system too. Also, check your paperwork on the unit. Is your warranty still good?? You'd be amazed how many people hand me units to fix with a warranty in place. Till then, some quick checks: 1. Go to windows explorer and see if the CD drive shows there. If not, it's not being recognized by the system. If it does show, right click on it and go to "properties". Do a troubleshoot from there. 2. Make sure all power is removed including the battery. If it is a "removable bay" item look on the bottom for a slide switch release and remove the cd drive. Look at the contacts for any debris or dust and clean them off. Take a flashlight and look into the slot for, bent pins, dust or anything else that looks wrong. Slowly slide the cd back in with a firm push at the end. Put the power back and reboot. 3. Try a bootable CD. That would be your windows CD. Put the CD in before you start the laptop. Turn it on and see if it starts a load. If it does, cancel out of it, remove the CD and it should reboot. Once in windows, put a data CD in. See if it shows a directory in explorer. I fix laptops. If you want my contact info PM me. Without the model numbers I can only guess on prices, but, the new drive (CD/RW/DVD) will run about $100 w/shipping. If it's a removable bay you can replace it yourself. If not, I charge by the hour for remove and replace. I also barter services.
