The superintendent's contract does not end for TWO years yet they extend AND give him a huge raise. Aren't there nationwide cell plans with unlimited minutes that cost less than $100 a month? Why the $3K cell phone allowance. Looks like at least two of the school board members where thinking when they voted no.
Guess they really needed the bond money because all the extra is going to the Superintendent. So who else got that big of a raise not even including the raise he will get from the state. Who said education does not pay?
We need to get some "Smart-Spenders" / couponing folks on some of these boards. They know how to stretch a dollar and spend wisely. :-D
And yet they claim they have no money to help my daughter in special education. What is going on here??? $3000 for a cell phone allowance is ludicrious! And I'm sorry but when I worked in the business/financial world years ago and needed my cell phone for clients, I had to pay my OWN bill. It's a job but he should be expected to pay his own cell phone bill. And a $15K travel allowance? where's he staying and travelling to that costs that much? There is such a misappropriation of funds in schools it just is not right. Someone needs to really think hard about this one. Hey, maybe he'll loan me his cell phone to call central office who's not returning my calls--LOL. It's only hurting the kids and I wish the administration could see that. Love to hear others thoughts on this one. I just think it is too much of a salary increase.
Heck for the 2 of us it's only $119. See I'm glad I'm not involved in the school system in any shape, form or fashion.
ahh, but you are because your tax dollars support the excess. Kinda hard for them to trot out the tried and true "It's for the children!"
I saw this earlier today, and it disgusted me. He makes over $800 a day. I'd be willing to bet money on the two that didn't vote for it, and you can bet money, I'll vote them back in.
How many employees is the superintendent responsible for? What size budget? How much would the CEO of a similar size business be paid in the private sector? I don't know the answers to any of those questions, I'm just suggesting that those issues might be factors in the appropriate pay level. And I do not know whether he is overpaid or not, or even whether or not he's doing a good job. But I don't think we can automatically assume he is overpaid based on the information I have seen so far.
Before you folks whine too much, what do comparable Superintendents make? What are their benefit packages. When you look at the figures for these other folks also ask yourself if you want their quality of schools. I suspect you will find it not to be that bad.
What percentage of Johnston County students failed the end of grade tests? He can start by returning the same percentage of his salary. Over $200,000 per year as a school administrator and you are trying to defend him. He makes more than the president. I will do the job for half and you would probably get the same results.

Yet another reason why the suckers in North Carolina are getting ripped. Salary Survey Report for Job: School Superintendent
Interesting, when I averaged the salary figures you found it equals $127,222, about what Dr. Parker's base salary is. I am sure none of their figures include "perks," either. I hope the Atlanta superintendant at least gets Braves tickets. I also find it interesting that folks don't want to pay for educating other people's kids. Well, my response is that if you don't pay for their education today, you'll be paying for their welfare check later. Having a well-educated populace is the only way our country can stay strong and viable in a world economy. The only way kids will be able to do anything other than take your order for fries is for them to be educated and educated well.
