Haven't seen them yet, but I'd wait till I got the list from your actual teacher. I made the mistake of buying off the generic list last year and ended up having to go back.

I know right? I was just wondering if its the same ol same ol, 16 rolls of paper towels, 20 boxes of kleenex, and oh yeah, some pencils and paper. :)

I was at the beach last week, and ran into the Wal Mart there, and they had the local schools list already there...

    thanks!

    grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Don't get me started on this buying supplies crap. It grates every nerve I have.

The lists won't be out until it's almost too late. Go to your school's websites. I hear they're posted there.

I went to McGee's and picked up the listings. Thank goodness, because the kindergarten list was different from the one they gave at registration. I bought the basics, and I'm sure they will need a little more. The 3rd grade list seemed pretty much on track from what my neighbors are all saying.
I didn't understand why my kindergartener(sp) had to have all of his pencils presharpened. Do they not even have pencil sharpeners in school now? I am feeling everyones frustrations, because I am right there too.

Funny....I am a relatively new teacher and as I started processing what I will need to begin the school year I want to kick myself hard....darn! I really need loads of kleenex tissue! All these years complaining as a parent about having to buy all those boxes of tissue and now I have to be on the asking end of it! I hate that!

I know for Mcgee's elementary they have a list on their web site and if you go to some of the teachers sites on there they have a list as well..but with out knowing who your teacher is then there isn't much you can do till you know. I'm going to get the basics for now..loose leaf paper, ect..and wait on the other stuff..I got last yr what they had at Walmart and it wasn't right..and I had to go back as well. My daughter is going in as a 2nd grader at Mcgee's. I have to wait till the 22nd to find out who my daughters teacher is, 5 days till school starts..kind of at the last moment.

lol, I remember that was the pencils and I didn't do it, I didn't think it was safe...one at a time..and my daughter had extra's left over in her box at the end of 1st grade..what they asked for during the year was glue sticks more then anything..

what happened to back in the day when we were in school and all we had to have on the first day was paper and pencils and maybe a few other notebooks and stuff..heck I'm only 39 and I can remember that stuff..I can't ever remember having to bring soap and tissues all that other stuff..why is that? Just a thought.

Since you are a teacher, let me ask you this....I don't mind helping the class out, don't misunderstand. I want my kid to have hand sanitizer and a kleenex at his beck and call, just for the record. I want to know two things...

    1) What do you do with the left overs at the end of the year? I ask this because I have seen in my 2 kids classes at the end of the year, rows of papertowels, stacks of Kleenex, etc. and
    2) What if there is a kid in the class whose family can't afford the extra stuff?

I am not trying to start a riot, just was wondering....

We pretty well beat this topic to death last year about this time, but I don't think you were posting them. I'll just state my position again on it though, I don't mind providing for my child and even some extra, but the list just seems to get longer and more expensive every year. I worry about the ones who can't afford it too.

I apologize kdc, for reopening the bucket of hair...I wasn't on here last year, as you stated. I absolutely don't mind contributing, I go above and beyond and provide from the Teacher's 'Wish List' all year, volunteer, try and do all I can to help out.....just thought I'd ask.

From my experience and doing this for too many years, I'm going to wait until we actually get the list from my children's teachers. I always use the Walmart list, and the grade lists and always spend a ton of money, so this year, I'll wait until after the first day of school and I get a list directly from my child's teacher.

I usually buy the specific supplies Monday night after the first day of school....I am lame. But I too, have been known to buy too much.

At least some nice teacher posted the Open House Date and time for Dixon Road, at least I know that in advance. :)

and kdc--thanks---I just wanted to make sure no one got upset...it can happen just like that (snapped my fingers) on some of these topics. I wanted everyone to know I came in peace. ;)

ktbailey....My situation is somewhat different than other teachers. I am an EC teacher and dont have the usual class size. My class is usually under 5 students, so for example.....as I went through my class "leftovers" this week, I made a note that those are things I do not need to ask for this fall. However, the leftovers were supplied by a parent whose child is in my class again...because of the makeup of the self-contained class I have students for 3 years, sometimes longer.

I am aware of which students can and/or cannot afford supplies and never push the issue....I think this is probably much more challenging for a regular ed teacher who is not familiar with his/her students.

I have four kids of my own....one in college...so believe me I understand the pain of the wallet....my brain can't seem to wrap itself around the two roles....Im a mom...no...Im a teacher....no ....Im a mom.....hehehehe!

I have to agree w/ everyone that the lists are ridiculous as well. I have 7 kids. We spent(w/ my parents' help) over $800 in supplies last year for 5 kids. No kidding. I can not do that this year. We are totally tapped out. I don't mind buying but I get so fustrated that not everyone contributes. IF they made the lists shorter, I believe more woruld be willing to contribute. And honestly, what in the world do we need 8 gluesticks for!? I went to schools in NC. I'm 35 now. I know, years ago. But we needed the basics. Just wash your hands w/ soap and water folks. Not really a need for all this hand sanitizer. And what do they do w/ the 20 some odd pair of scissors they ask for each year? I'm tempted to ask for them back at the end of the year. Honestly, htey can't all break those scissors each year! And why are we buying copy paper for the office?? Don't get it. Growing up, we used the brown paper towels, soap and water and were no worse for wear.

Then, once we get all this stuff, the teachers are always requesting it through their weekly newsletters again. I don't mind giving my kids the stuff they NEED to succeed in school. But this year I honestly don't have the money to buy it all for them again. Completely tapped out financially. I have the basics for them and will appologize that I can't buy the kleenex, the sanitizer, the wipes, etc. But I honestly can't do it. I think there has to be a solution. One year a principal asked me what parents think about these lists b/c she wanted to change it. Never happened as she got transferred. But I do think if we all said something, maybe admin would change it to more basic stuff. Off my soapbox. BTW, stock up about 3 weeks after school at Target. 75% off the school stuff then. Bookbags, lunchboxes, etc. It helps. Good luck and let's all share where we find the deals for all this stuff. Every little bti helps.

    Take care,

    Stephanie.

That's good to know!! I know that the stuff asked for is used. I just always worry about the little ones whose families struggle. I am fortunate enough to be able to volunteer a bit for the school too. I try to do what I can.

Thanks for answering the question! Good Luck this coming school year! :)
