The only things that I had left over from last year was some paper. I ended up buying Kleenex for the class the last 3 weeks of school. I know my grade level really tried to keep the list small this year. My son is going in to 1st grade this year and their list has twice the stuff 5th grade has. If you are looking for supply lists at Dixon, try the teachers' pages.
You know what I miss?? At West Clayton Elementary the PTA used to purchase the supplies in bulk/wholesale and pass the savings on to us parents. At the end of the school year you could go ahead and purchase your students next year supplies (it was under $20 bucks) and it would be waiting on their desk the first day of school. I know the PTA marked it up a little bit and that helped with fundraising, but $20 is CHEAP!!
I stuggle too all the time, I do get the stuff on the list and with my parents help as well. But each and everything is listed with my daughters name on it. I didn't get the stuff back from Polenta, but I did from Mcgee's and I think it was up to the teacher..but I did tell them to let me know when HER box gets low and I will refill it when needed. I will be letting my daughter fix her box up how she wants it and it does have her name on it..it works out well for her. Sheri
My son was at Polenta this year, and he got everything back (scissors, etc). I'm in the classroom a lot, and I can easily see how kids go thru glue sticks like crazy (in the lower grades, some tend to use an entire stick on one art project - yes, I'm stretching the truth a bit, but honestly there are some kids that love love love to use that glue stick). Having been a teacher, I'm willing to cut back in some areas for back to school supplies...and we usually give an extra few for those who may not be able to afford some supplies. It is tough, and I remember being in school waaaay back when, and we didn't need all this stuff. Of course, we had cooler things then, like rubber cement (sniff sniff!) and paste in a jar (anyone remember seeing someone eat it?)

lol, your right them glue sticks don't last..I do end up buying more a couple of times a yr..plus I have double of supplies for her at home for projects and homework as well. I was one of the ones that tried the paste in the jar...lol alot of us did at that age. oh and the rubber cement I so forgot about that stuff. hehe.. Sheri
I have always gotten back all of the Boys personal stuff (McGee's and Dixon), scissors, loose leaf paper, pencil holder, folders, etc. Always get that back at the end of the year. As a matter of fact, after the first couple of years of school, because of having everything returned, I never have to buy much. Just the 'specifics' from the teacher, like this year, looks like 'Graph paper and Sharpies' are all I need to purchase.
I know what you all mean...it gets more expensive every year. Right now I am watching the front page of the Staples ad and getting the basics that they may have on sale. Like this week they have Crayola Crayons (24pk) for 15 cents! We will not get the schedules for Clayton Middle until the first day. But we did get the Orientation notice..it will be on the 23rd.
I no longer teach elementary school, but I know how things used to vanish in the classroom. I have always taught EC so my class size hasn't been what the other classes are. I always sent home a supply list (which I kept below $20) and went out myself and bought LOTS of extras. By the end of the year, there would be about 5 pairs of scissors left in the box and less than half the crayons, markers, etc. No doubt I would always have to buy tissues by the end of the year. I will never forget the first year DH and I were married and filing taxes together...I had over $1500 in school receipts for the year. Treasure box, treat box, crafts, Christmas gifts, Birthday certificates/pencils, basic school supplies, etc. I don't spend a fraction of that now that I teach HS.
school supplies list G'Day! Be careful with those GENERIC school supply lists that come out in discount stores or even from the schools themselves. They are just that, GENERIC. You won't get a true list until your school's open house/orientation just before school starts. If you shop from a generic list, you'll find that a few days before school you'll need to run out and both more stuff. Or worse, find out that some of the things you bought from the generic list aren't needed. Don't know about you but I don't need more school supplies around my house. I only need to buy what I need. Also, if the list says to buy 4 packs of notebook paper, just buy one and wait till your child runs low and then get the next pack. If you send in all requested packs at once, the teacher sends them home for you to keep. Again, I've got enough stuff in my house! Do what I do. Wait till the open house at school and then run out and buy your supplies. You'd be shocked at what's available. Most people buy earlier than that and the stores have restocked and still have great prices.
