I dont have any sound on my computer/speakers. I have the Altec Lansing speakers with the bass thingy. I had to reformat my comp and I cant figure out why they are not working. Everything is hooked up right. hooked into the Output. I even hooked up the speakers to a portable cd player, they work. All my devices and drivers are working (or say they are) in the device manager and I dont know what else to check. Anyone? Thanks in advance I have windows xp.
Did you check your volumn to make sure it isn't muted? If not just click on the volumn icon in the lower right of your screen. This happened to my friend, someone muted her volumn.
check your settings under speakers or audio, be sure you see your speakers listed and that is where its suppose to be going... I am sure there are more technical terms for what I said but oh well
Ok let me go try this. The mute button isnt on. I already checked that. This stuff drives me crazy, I dont know how you computer people do it. It gives me a headache. Will be back later with results. I do appreciate this!
Right click on your "My Computer" Icon go to "Manage" Then select "Device Manager" If you see any red "X" then list them here. If one says Audio controller click on it and update the driver.
Ugh. It says that I have all the drivers and my sound card may not be compatible. The speakers used to work on this comp. Confused
This free program with specificaly identify your sound card. When you get that post it here and I can give you a link to the driver. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Look on the right hand side for "Multimedia" looks like this: Multimedia MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device Standard Game Port VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM)
Not good, you'll need to take it to someone to check further. It's more than likely an "onboard" sound device that's failed. Onboard means the sound card is built into the main board. You can always buy a cheap sound card and have it installed. Shouldn't cost more than $25 labor + cost of the card you pick.
And my my first born son, my blood, and house....ROFL. Thank you for helping me. Guess I have to get a sound card and install. hat would make that "go out" lightning? anything like that? Sorry, I am not a computer genius but I know a good amount (am learning in school)
stupid question, but have you tried manually running "Add remove hardware" from your control panel? Sometimes it'll pick up something that wasn't noticed during the OS install.
Many things could cause that failure, age, not cleaning the inside of your PC, wrong impeadiance speakers being plugged in or short in the cord, ...etc. Lightning would have zapped the whole thing so I don't see that as a fault. Here's a good but cheap card in stock at the Raleigh store: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1111756&CatId=2769 Here's a link on how to install it: http://www.soundblaster.com/resources/read.asp?articleid=53879&cat=4 YOU just did the job for $10.70 !!!! That's a good suggestion and definitely worth a try. But, Belarc gets the data on hardware in the PC from a query to the board chipsets and not the OS. If the chipset fails to respond with identification Belarc lists "Not Found". Your suggestion made me think about the BIOS also. If it is onboard sound it may be turned off in the bios. If so Belarc will not find it. But that's a far reach, as I don't think Tit4Tat even knows what the BIOS is and couldn't have possibly changed it. (Just kidding T4T   )
actually you are probably right.. no offense taken...I am going to install the sound card myself...so if you dont see me online:lol: Took the cover off 2 weeks ago and dusted and fixed a power button short. the comp is only a year old..well that is ancient in computer years.. must be a short or something....ugh...thanks for the links!!
