Hello everyone. since you all seem very knowledgeable on here, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to get any type of road sign installed in their yard. Do you go to the DOT or maybe the drivers' license place? Guessing it would be the DOT. IF so, where are they located? Is it Smithfield if I live in Johnston County?

We have a deaf-blind son (though not blind yet) and would like a SLOW Deaf Child sign in our yard since he can't really hear the cars go by. If any of you know where to go, please let me know. Or a number I can call. Thanks in advance. I know of a website where I can purchase a sign but wasn't sure if that was legal or not. Don't want to get in trouble from a stupid sign if you know what I mean.

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!!!

Hi! We are deaf parents with a hearing child, but we knew about a special sign in a person's yard. We've seen it before and I can be able to share this info with you:

    1. Sign can be purchased by the homeowner. This sign is legal because it does have reflective on it, which it can be seen at night. Here's the link:
    http://street.safeshopper.com/240/cat240.htm?771

    2. Some county or city offers free sign. To request a "Blind Child Area" or "Blind Person Area" sign, call Johnston County office , and ask to speak with an engineer in the Neighborhood Traffic Safety Program if you live on a residential street, or an engineer in the Safety Investigations group if you live on an arterial street. I don't have their phone number, but you can google it.

The county office should be able to assist you. I hope this helps. Good luck. :)

I would suggest that you call the Division NCDOT office and allow them to direct your call (252)237-6164. You could also call the Resident Engineers office in Smithfield (919)934-5863.

GIRL, you go ahead and post your sign!! when someone complains about it. ask them if they have any better idea to keep your kid safe. If they cant answer you then they shouldnt be critisizing your efforts to keeping you children in a safe environment. but if someone does complain that usually means they work for some place or some one who is in charge of placing said sign's. either way you win.

Thanks for all your help! I really do appreciate it. I called and left messages today so we'll see where that takes us. If they don't respond in a week, I'm just going to buy the sign and put it up myself. Hoping they will call back though. This is really a safety issue for him. Want to keep it up till he's older and knows not to go in the road. Thanks again for the tips and #'s. Now, if I could only get the JCMH dept. to call back....

    Enjoy your short work week!

    Take care,

we had to buy (from DOT) our own 'SLOW CHILDREN AT PLAY' for our neighborhood. Everyone pitched in and we also picked it up and had to put it up.

I'm sorry, but I read the thread twice and did not see any post where Abdulina (or anyone else) was even suggesting that there were complaints (or even a worry of complaints) over the potential sign. The original post was simply asking where the sign could be legally acquired.

dont be sorry, I didnt say that someone had complained, i mearly stated that if she felt that her child was in emminent danger that she should post any thing she wants to just to ease her stress, then if someone complained, that she should ask the said complaning person for more Ideas.
    all is well.

Great news! They called back and were really nice. I have to write a letter requesting it, and have a doctor's diagnosis. I send that in and they'll send someone out. They did not say it would cost anything so I'm hoping not. Working on the letter tonight and calling doc tomorrow. --that's the part that will take the longest--LOL. Great advice and more than that, great contact #'s.

If you're in our neighborhood, I'm sure you'l see some new signs up next month!!

    Take care,

    Stephanie--mom to 7 kids!

I've often thought of hiding in the bushes and rolling a big red ball into the street when I see some on coming vehicles traveling too fast.

It's a dead end street! Is it NECESSARY to get it up to 55 before they hit the next curve?

I believe it was $60. We had no problem getting everyone with kids in the neighborhood to chip in for the actual sign and the post and cement to get it up.

Not bad. I would have guessed more than $300.

i with ya girl, the speed some people come flying down our cul-de-sac is unbelievable - scared my granddaughter to death one day when she was on her scooter, caused her to wreck and they didn't even stop:shock:
