Something I thought about that you should do BEFORE you use HJT to delete anything..... Use "Add or Remove Programs" to do it first. Two ways to get there: 1. start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs OR 2. start > Run > appwiz.cpl Then run another HJT scan. Then clean it up accordingly.
What is your opinion of the list in the above post? I will try to locate the programs in the control panel that aren't being used. The Zune stuff stays since all my kids have Zunes. By the way, thanks for your assist. It started running better after just changing the start up settings.
Since this is a "shared" PC, some of that stuff that ddrdan told you to remove might have to stay. OR they get their own PC, which is the way we do it in my house. My wife and I each have our own and the kids share one. Since this is a "shared PC", are you the administrator and the kids, etc. set up with a "user" account? If they do not have a user account their's nothing to stop them from downloading and installing/adding stuff again, and messing it all up for you to clean up. Only real way to prevent that, once you get it cleaned up and running smooth and fast now, is to set yourself up as administrator and everyone else with restricted access. That is how I have our kids' PC set up. They aren't allowed to change their password (Win 2000 Pro), download programs, delete files, etc.
Wow, this is a pain in the a$$! I am now afraid to do anything because i don't want to F up the PC. It is shared by the kids mainly for homework and what not. I am not buying teenagers their own PC until college. I do most work on a laptop only my wife and I have access to, I may just leave it alone at this point
Nah, it's not really all that complicated. If it's running to your satisfaction now, leave it be. Would be worth the price of not having your kids complain that the stuff they installed and are using doesn't work anymore.
DrDan: To avoid linking, wrap the text in [noparse][noparse][/noparse][/noparse], it also lets you post BBCode, so people can see it. [noparse]http://www.google.com[/noparse]
This appears to be getting a bit venturous and tenous for Stone. Also, one thing none of us asked. . . just HOW and/or WHAT aspect of your PC is running "slow"? Is it you your internet surfing, a particular program, boot up time, etc. This all may be trying to kill a fly with a baseball bat if it is something isolated.
The items I posted for deletion do nothing to the software applications ability to run. It shuts down it's ability to boot when your PC boots and the R0 R1 R2's are search redirects which definitely should be deleted.. All those items are "nag" crap. These software items are booted so they can communicate with their web components. If you don't mind waiting 5 seconds when you start one of these ap's then doing the clean-up will excellerate your speed when using other ap's. These pre-booting items are your problem with speed. PS: If you use AOL then don't bother trying to clean anything up. Live with what you have. AOL is your biggest problem. Zune is a screaming second. Yahoo is your third. If you'd like a second opinion from real experts post your question here:http://www.experts-exchange.com/
