Looking for a 'stand alone' type dsl internet service for my son. He lives in an apt and they don't have a land line or cable service. They have direct tv (I think) and it doesn't offer internet service.

Also - he has vista with 'microsoft works' , he needs Excel for school. Anyone know where you can buy or download just the program? Thanks!!

  2. When I use to have Direct TV I remember seeing some commercials they had for internet service. But you have to remember that if there is a storm and if they lose their Satellite TV service they lose their internet. As far as an excel type program they can download OPEN OFFICE its free and it had a spreadsheet program. I have it but have never installed it. But i think he can import/export into a excel format.

thanks for the suggestion - but he needs the actual Excel program.

  4. Well he has to buy it and of course that's Microsoft and that cost $. I do not know if they sell individual components of office but the office suite does cost a bit.

Any particular reason he MUST have excel?

Unless he will be using templates provided him specifically for Excel, or needs to turn in some scripting, Open Office's Calc program should be an acceptable substitute.

BTW (I'm assuming college) you should check with the school to see if they provide student licenses for MS Office, most schools that require it provide students with a copy of, or access to, the application.

He goes to Wake Tech, don't know if they provide this or not. He checked the bookstore and they only sell the whole group of windows applications, not just excel, although the book 'Guide to MS Excel for Sci and Eng' was one of the books he had to buy - it did not come with a CD.

  7. when i was over at JCC for network administration i was able to update to XP Pro for free. I had to get the CD from my College Advisor. Have your son check with his advisor.

He's supposed ot meet with his advisor tomorrow, maybe he'll be able to help him....I hope so!! :banghead:

MS sells a student version that would probably be the cheapest way to go. getting DSL would depend on what phone company he has. If Time-warner is in his Appt, he could get roadrunner and not even have cable. There is another option using cell phone broadband. you can get a PC card from a cell company and get pretty good coverage for about $50 a month. you might also be able add broadband to a current cell service and connect a computer to your cell phone w/ a usb cable.

Here's full version 2007 office for $75. Can't beat that.
    Craigs List
Always get their address or at least phone number that you can call and see if it's them in case the COA is being used. If it's sealed there should be no problem.

There are other versions on Craigs that are cheaper. I use 2003 at home and 2007 at work. I hate 2007, they changed every thing to TABS!!!!! Give me my menu's back!!!!!!!

I have been told by a pretty good source that you can get just dsl from at&t if he lives in their territory and I think Embarq now does it too...No land line necessary.

You will have to get microsoft office and select custom when asked to install full version or custom. That way you can select excel only. You will still need to get office however. I have never heard of microsoft releasing just excel.

Only other way around is to know someone who has office on disk (hint, hint) and get it from them. I have a couple copies of office pro that I held onto when I was smart of switched to Apple. I knew plenty of people still on pc's that would need help when dealing with microsoft software.
