I bought a laptop and router yesterday and I'm having problems getting the router to work.

    Here's the deal -
It's a Lynksys the procedure for hooking it up is very straightforward

unplug the ethernet cord from my pc and

plug it into the internet jack on the back of the router then

take the blue cord that cam with the router and plug it into the ethernet plug on my pc

Then plug the other end of the blue cord into ethernet 1 slot on the router

then plug the router into a power supply

    What could be simpler?

Well I have a cable modem from TWC, so I took the Ethernet plug out of the back of it and followed the directions, as stated above and all I got was an error message that said I was not connected to the internet - and sure enough I wasn't - even after re-booting my modem.

I'm probably overlooking something simple - can one of you please point out what I'm doing wrong after you stop laughing at how dumb I am?

    Thanks

My experience, although very limited, is that one misstep sends you back to square 1. In other words, you have to follow the directions for hooking everything up exactly step by step in order for all to work. If you miss one step/connection in the order in which its explained you have to cut everything back off/unplug and start from the beginning. If all else fails, I don't hesitate to call my internet provider for help. If I'm not misstaken, you need to check with TW and make sure that what you purchased will work with TWC equipment. I recently bought a router and had the same problem, had to take it back and purchase one that was listed to work for TWC. Good luck, I feel your pain.

Does your computer have a switch that allows you to change over to wireless? I didn't know I had to make sure that was on, but it has to be on to make sure things work. I have a router by Belkin and I just called them and they had me do a few things, changing some numbers and it works fine.

Please list your Dlink router & RR modem model numbers.

Also, are you calling the laptop the "PC" in your explanation or are you pluging the router/modem to a desktop and using the laptop wireless?????

Whenever you unplug your ethernet cable from the RoadRunner modem and plug something else into it (like a router), be sure and unplug the power from the RoadRunner modem for at least a couple of minutes (do 5 minutes just to be sure), and then plug the power back in. Just cycling the power quickly will NOT do it.

When the RoadRunner modem is powered on, it takes the MAC address of the device plugged in to it, and will only work with that MAC address until the power is removed for several minutes. I don't know what the purpose of this is (it doesn't prevent you from switching devices, it just makes it a little inconvenient), but that's how it works...

The ethernet cable from the RR modem STILL has to have one end plugged into the modem and the other end gets plugged into the new router. Make sure you plug it into the CORRECT port on the new router. All of the ports on the back of the new router are NOT equal and it's important to plug in your modem ethernet cable to the port on the router that is for the internet connection. Try turning everything off and then turn the router on first, wait a few minutes, and then turn on the RR modem. Once you establish the connection, going forward you shouldn't have to do this again
