I've been dealing with this for years and never found the answer. Maybe someone here knows.

Sometimes when I cut and paste something into MS Word it will change the formating, I guess? The problem is when I want to type a line in an existing paragraph, instead of moving the characters to the right, my new typing eats the existing typing. Half the time I don't see it and before I've eaten 3 lines of what I already typed!!!!!!

Any way to stop this in formatting or some other setting in MS Word??

PS: It also happens on here when you are typing a post.

MS Word will sometimes change the formatting when you cut & paste, depending on the source of your C&P. Publisher is worse. When I try to cut and paste from an e-mail into Publisher, sometimes every line is in a separate text box. If I C&P to Word, and then from there to Publisher, it doesn't do that. I have no idea why. I also have no idea why it would change from insert to overtype on its own.

Sorry, I guess none of that was any help. You do have my sympathy, though. ;)

The brief description sounds as though you have activated your "insert" key on your keyboard. When the "insert" key is activated it 'substitutes' what you are typing for the print which currently exists to the immediate right of each stroke.

The formatting issue sometimes occurs because of what you've cut/paste verses the default margin settings and font of the MS Word. Once you've cut/paste you might need to manipulate the margins and the font of the newly created document in MSWord. Especially if your MSWord does not recognize the font which was used in the original item you copy/paste.

    Formatting problems in MS Word

I will assume you are cutting and pasting from the Internet. What is happening is the formatting (html, etc.) doesn't convert in MS Word. Therefore, you get lines that are uneven, fonts that are extremely large, etc. When you paste your information into MS Word immediately do "select All" (under Edit menu or keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A) change the font to a manageable size and do the other formatting change like removing Bold text and underlines. The problem with your text replacing other text is because you are in what is called the "overwrite" mode. The insert key located to the right of the main keyboard is a toggle key and has two functions. The default setting in MS is always "insert" mode. Insert mode allows you to insert text which causes the cursor to continue to move to the right when you are typing. When you tap the insert key, it changes the mode to "overwrite" mode. You can tell you are in this mode by looking at the very bottom of the MS Word Window in what is called the status area (lists column #, page #, etc). You will see commands that appear transparent when not in use. The OVR command will appear bolded if this option is turned on (that's when you are replacing text instead of inserting text). To turn this off, tap your insert key once and make sure that the OVR is no longer bold. Hope this helps. Oh, and just FYI, there is a MS Office Minicourse (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) being offered at the Cleveland Campus starting 6/1. It might be of help.

That seems to be it. My delete key and my insert key are very close. My finger is hitting both when i key delete. Thanks for the help

Thank you, now all I need is an led on my keybord showing when insert is on or off.

Also, who was the bubble gum chewing busted glasses geek who thought tabs, instead of windows, were a better idea???:lol:

Concerning the formatting issue...if I want to cut and paste from another source and have the "paste" act correctly in the document, I use Notepad as an in-between.

    - Select and copy from the source
    - Paste into Notepad
    - Select text again in Notepad and copy
    - Paste into final document

Since Notepad will only handle text, it strips out all the stuff in the background that can affect the formatting in Word.

Now I would have never thought of that, but it's a great idea!

In Word click Edit - choose Paste Special, then
    Choose Unformatted Text, Click OK

If you check the status bar at the bottom of the window in Word, it'll show OVR in dark letters if you're going to overwrite your stuff. I've noticed that a lot of the new keyboards coming out don't have the insert key or they've moved it somewhere else.
