For me, the few bad have ruined it for many who may need it. I still fall for a new line once in a while, but I choose to give to established charities instead of road side beggars.
I try to give to all. Maybe it's good for my karma. If I have nothing, I honestly say so, and offer a prayer for them and thanks that we're not in the situation of having to ask..yet. If angels do indeed walk the earth among us, would they not place themselves in front of us in disguise?
Exactly what the Bible teaches. Hebrew 13:2 NIV says "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it."
This is the very same woman that was panhandling in the Wal-Mart in Smithfield about 3 or so months ago. She walked up very friendly to my husband and I and had a different story for us then. She had come all the way to Wal-Mart and realized she had left her wallet at home. She was wanting to know if we would be kind enough to let her have just $5.00 for gas to get back home because she didn't have enough to get home. Being the "friendly and helpful" citizens we are, we gladly gave up the $5.00 and she thanked us dozens of times before walking away. By the time we got up to the check-out, she was giving the same story to another couple just a few feet from us, not knowing we were standing there. She turned around after being denied, her mouth dropped and she quickly walked away. I just hope she really needed that money. I don't care what her story was, true or not...I just hope she really needed it.
I had completely forgotten about it until I read your post, but I got the very same story from a woman in Walmart, quite a while back, at least 6 months ago. I too gave her the $5. I agree with you, I hope she needed the money.
Well regardless if she did or not she will answer one day for that if she was or is BSing people. as far as you and others who give, it won't go unnoticed... 8)8)
I usually tell them I have no cash on me but that I can give them what change I have in my car. They usually go away.
On our way to the Walmart on 401 the same guy who is always standing at the intersection near the gas station was there. On the way back it was a different person. This time it was a young man with a sign that said he was just discharged from foster care. The man in front of us gave him some money. I was thinking about it. My Daughter had said how sad it was. Then she noticed he had tatoos and asked me how he could afford those? Hmmm. I don't have the answer to that one!
I will give people food but I will not give money (unless I know the situation personally or rep. charity). I have been burned a few times by giving money.
Its tough now a days for every one. Money is so tight. I can only speak for myself. I would like to help people who really need it but sometimes its really hard to tell the people who actually need the help and the ones who are just huxters that just want something for nothing. I'll give to the homeless shelter or to the foodbank, but not to individuals. And I will definitely not give to someone who approaches me in the middle of a store.
Me too. The last time I gave a guy some money at a gas station I saw him on the front page of the paper the next month. Turns out he had stolen a LOT of metal from a jobsite and was caught trying to sell it. Oh well, that's what he gets!
For everyone to see....... 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' 37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' 40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
