yogurt fruit cereal bar string cheese if we go see daddy before we go home its a yoohoo with some kind of candy bar
for my grandkids: fruit, some type of crackers, beef sticks, puddings, fruit rollups or bites, applesauce or fruit cups and sometimes cookies - i try to vary it every week and no i did not say it was nutritious:lol:
My son is a milk and cereal junkie. He's not into candy and candy bars, soft drinks, snack cakes, etc. He also likes fruit and does love his Dorito chips.
I cut out after school snacks last year. They got off the bus at near 5:00pm. So, just had an earlier dinner and it seemed to work out. Fridays though, they know is dessert day so they know it will be something sweet! My kids are fruit and veggie fanatics but can wolf down a whole cake in one sitting as well. We just balance it all out. Shoot, when you have to cut a round cake into 9 slices, you're not getting thatmuch anyhow--LOL. I also cut out after school snacks b/c they were having snack time at school as well. You just reminded me that I need to get in gear and do the stuff for packing school lunches. Stephanie--mom to 7
My kids like any kind of fruit, and need some carbs and protein for the activities they do after school so I bring baggies of grapes (easy, and can freeze them for really hot days, they love frozen grapes) or apple slices or bananas, and sometimes I'll make a turkey and cheese sandwich and give each a half. They like carrot sticks with ranch dressing and celery with peanut butter. Sometimes I'll pop a bag of microwave popcorn for them to share, or they like pretzels and goldfish crackers too. I've also brought muffins (blueberry and chocolate chip), and they love string cheese and gogurts. I try to vary it some, and they seem to look forward to that after a long day of school.
I keep apples, bananas, oranges, grapes Granola Bars Pop Tart A Little Debbie Mine could eat at 3:30 when they get home....and then when I cook around 6. They have tapeworms.
Dry cereal, cereal bars, pop tarts, fruit, yogurt etc. I generally don't allow "junk" before dinner but occasionally will cave. He gets home around 4:00, dinner is not usually until between 6 & 7. He alway has lunch between 10:30 and 11:00 AM, so he is famished by the time he gets home and starts going through the cabinets the minute he walks in. He's very thin, so I am not worried about calories at the moment. I wish he'd eat more.
I swear we need an orchard here. They ate 75 apples in two days the other day. My 9yo had 9 apples in a day! These kids eat fruit all the time. Tried to find deals on food b/c we go through piles of it. With school starting back, give me some hints of where to get fruit CHEAP please. Today, we were all bad. We all had mint oreo cookies. Hey, some days you just have to have chocolate--LOL. Though we all ate bananas. Does that counteract the oreos?? Just kidding. I think it's great we all give the kids fruit and veggies and also sneak in the goodies to. Now, suggestions for drinks? NO juice boxes for my kids b/c they are too expensive. We did lots of water bottles last year but they added up as well. Hate koolaid as it stains everything. We also did lemonade and gatorade(outrageously priced btw). So, please give me some drink ideas folks that I can use. Thanks. Stephanie--mom to 7
Stick with the water and lemonade. Sports drinks are not good for the kidneys, unless your doing something that causes you to sweat a large amount and need to replace electrolytes etc.
Check out Aldi's. There is one in Fuquay Varina, Raleigh, and Cary. They have fantastic prices on bags of fruit and veggies. Hands down, they have the best prices ever, but you have to take your own grocery bags with you, or they charge you a small fee for each. It's worth the trip if you need to make a major haul.
Hey, thanks a ton! I never knew that about the kidney deal & our urologist never told us! One of our sons has one kidney. So we are extra careful. And despite tremendous playing outside & heavy activity, he rarely sweats. This is all due to the kidney issue. Howver, now I will ask the urologist abotu the sports drinks when we go back. See, this board is great! Stephanie--mom to 7
I used to give mine one bottled water at the start of each week in middle school. Then they would just refill the bottle with water from the tap or fountain or from home every day for the rest of the week. That way they still had their "water bottle" in class but I wasn't paying for a new one each day. Juice is cheaper if you buy the frozen cans, too, instead of the ready to drink stuff in the bottles. My kids always preferred the apple and orange juice from the frozen cans to the bottled stuff when they were younger. BJ's has cheap milk compared to most grocery stores. I'm not sure if that is the kind of info you were looking for...hope it helps.
I agree, ALDI'S really impressed me, wish they had one in Garner... Even their frozen veggies are excellant quality. That's the only place that I have found frozen green beans that I like. Women come in that store and buy 12 bags at a time, therefore they are out of stock alot... I haven't found anything bad there and the prices are great. Bags are only 10cents if you don't bring your own.... CHECK IT OUT!!
I love Aldi's too! Their brands are not names I have ever heard of but they are made by the same companies that mfg the name brands so I cannot tell a difference in taste most times. We bring bags or boxes to use or you can take empty boxes that you may see in the store, like at Sam's or BJ's. Also, you pay $ .25 for a cart but when you return it, you get your quarter back. Their prices cannot be beat!! WE love ALDI!!
There are some flavors of "invisible" koolaid. IF I buy koolaid I try to buy those because they are clear. I typically make it with Splenda.
