I don't think it's as inexpensive as it sounds. The cabin sleeps 8, and the $40 rate probably only applies for full capacity. That would be $320 per night.

DD stayed in a cabin in Sevierville TN (near Pigeon Forge) and was very pleased. Here is a link to the rental site:

Here's a less expensive place. Not luxury accommodations by any means, but right on the river between Cherokee and Bryson City, convenient to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

We use Valle Crucis Log Cabin Rentals. Beautiful little town outside of Boone. They have all price ranges and are great to rent from!

Yes, VRBO.com is great, that's who I used when we had our cabin. I've never seen anyone have rental rates/person. Weird. Mine was $125/night, plus cleaning (flat fee)

We're going to the mountains the weekend of 10/10. If you go to Sugar Mountain, they still have lower summer rates since the ski season doesn't start until Nov. Also, 10/10 & 10/11 is Oktoberfest on Sugar Mtn. and they are giving 25% discounts on accommodations which are everything from houses to condos. We went through Dereka's. Here's the link if anyone is interested: http://www.staysugar.com/rentals/locations.phtml
Nice people & only about 13 miles from Grandfather Mtn. & the Mile High Swinging Bridge (not too far from Linville & Linville Caverns too).

Our unit will be around $136. per night which includes 13.75% tax, $45.00 damage waiver & $55.00 cleaning & linens fee.

Thanks everyone for the info and the links!! :)
We found cabins with vrbo before and I like looking there because they got the paw symbol next to some of the cabins, since we will be traveling with our little dachshund.
Stayed at a cabin in Bryson City once,I think they are called Cold Creek Cabins or so,I remember it had some of the best views ever!

We use vrbo.com all the time. We stayed at the top of ***** Mt this past summer in a $million home that slept 16 people easily for five days for $300/per family (there were five families) The house was full of kids but you never knew it. Hopefully we are going back to the area in a few weeks - this one is a freebie- thank goodness as I think the rates will go up because of people heading up to see the fall colors
