Is it worth fifty bucks? Or is the free version still good enough? Or is there some other protection that would be better for me? I've been using AVG free for several years, and it's time to update to version 9. V. 8.5 will no longer be supported after 12/1. The notice looks like you have to pay, but way down at the bottom it says you can still upgrade your current version only, which would be the free one.

I was utilizing them but my computer guru downloaded a newer updated(I think) Microsoft security essentials program on mine... it didn't cost anything and not sure where he found it but he knows his stuff and says it works really well.
Maybe some of these other gurus will chime in... ddrdan franken may have some ideas on that... :jester:

There is a free downloadable version of AVG 9 available, as I just installed it on a laptop I rebuilt for a friend. On another forum I read I've heard alot of good things about Avast being better than the newest version of AVG, but haven't tried it. Also heard that the new Winblows security suite is pretty good as well, but again haven' tried it.

We use Mcafee here at work which I dislike, and I use AVG for home use.

Yeah, it tells you about the free download in the fine print. I'm just debating whether to do that, or spring for the paid version, or do something different.

The paid version offers a little more protection as far being a full inter-grated suite as compared to the free which is a stand alone AV program that is limited in some of the aspects that it can protect against.

However there are other programs out there that are stand alone and free that will work just as well when used to compliment each other, just that a suite makes it a nice simple easy to use option compared to having 3-4 programs to maintain.

I stopped using AVG when they came out with version 8. They turned it into bloatware and it slowed all of my machines down, and some customers' machines down too. As soon as I uninstalled v8, they all sped back up.

I use avast on all of my towers and and Avira on the laptop, SpywareBlaster & SpywareGuard (free versions) on all of them, and an occasional sweep with MalwareBytes (free version) and RegSeeker.

AVG vs free AVG....just stick with the free one if you're gonna stick with AVG. I used to be a big fan but I'm switching all of our desktops to Avast free.

Free AVG is fine but I'm running Avast on this desktop.

OK, how come nobody told me Avast! talks to you? When you know you're alone in the house and a voice suddenly says, "Virus database has been updated," it's a little spooky!

You can turn it off. Nobody in the house like hearing it on their computer so I shut it off on all of them except mine.

If you have an avast! icon (rotating blue ball with a to the right) in your taskbar:

    right click avast! icon
    click Program Settings...
    click Sound
    check Disable avast! sounds
    click OK

If you do not have the avast! icon in your taskbar:

    click Start/Windows icon
    click Programs/All Programs
    click avast! Antivirus folder
    click avast! Antivirus
wait for the memory test to complete OR click Stop Memory Test or press Alt-S
click the ^ (open/close) button on the top left corner of the avast! control panel
    click Settings...
    click Sound
    check Disable avast! sounds
    click OK
    close avast! control panel

Thanks, that was easy! It just startled me because I wasn't expecting it.
