I've been having issues with internet explorer encountering problems, such as when I type in a website address it will sometimes redirect me to a completely different website or a message that it has encountered a problem and has to close and re-open the site I'm on and also when I'm moving around a site it will do this as well. Does anyone know what I need to do to recorrect this.
I've recently done an update for Internet Explorer 8 to see if this would help, but it didn't. Should I try performing another update?

    That's such a useless answer.

Kinda sounds more like a virus of some sort.

Download malwarebytes antimalware and run a scan. you can get it at malwarebytes.org.
You should also make sure your antivirus is up to date and do a full scan with it. There are a lot of malware infections that re-direct, and they are not limited to users that use internet explorer.

To add to the good advice Trev47 gave you:

Always run 2 or three different spyware removers. One will never catch everything. Along with Malwarebytes try Spybot and Kaspersky. The Kaspersky is a 30 day 'full' operational trial.

(Note: As Trev said, always click the UPDATE after loading these programs to get the latest protection files.)

Hijackthis is free & great for removing hijacked browser start pages. This site has a great "How To" and a link to the download. whatthetech.com

If one of the softwares finds a worm it can't remove, kaspersky has free individual virus specific removers: removal tools

If you have a Smartphone, Kaspersky has a free beta (full) version available for your phone: Kaspersky Mobile Security 9.0 (beta2) Beta requires you sign up and you'll need your Smartphone IMEI.

    Hope that helps.

Also, when updating IE, at the first startup it will redirect you to 'getting started'. Always check the negative answer when going through the screens. Like "No, I don't want" and "I'll keep what I have" ..etc. When you updated you may have allowed them them to put in the "We'll decide for you" choice in the URL window.
