My dad has a shortcut on his laptop that states Email Shortcut. His email is through AT&T and so is his DSL. He continues to get the following message when he tries to forward or send mail. What's going on? The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Fw: Now here is an engineering marvel!', Account: 'bamafan39207', Server: 'smpt.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E Thanks ole' wonderful 4042 gurus! Sherry
Sherry, I did a little bit of research on your Dad's issue and I found this solution on one of the forums: 1. Open your email client program. 2. Locate the email account settings for your particular client (it is usually under the "Tools" section and is labeled "Account settings") 3. Change the POP server to pop.att.yahoo.com. 4. Change the SMTP server to smtp.att.yahoo.com. 5. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the SMTP port to 465. 6. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the POP3 port to 995. 7. Confirm the above settings then click OK. I hope that this works for your Dad. If not, it may be an AT&T issue and he may need to contact their technical support folks. Take care.
Thank you so much. I will follow your instructions and let you know what happens. He is very frustrated at the moment so I am hoping to help him. Sherry
Another question he has......why is it att.yahoo? What does yahoo have to do with att? Thanks, Sherry
I can relate to your Dad's confusion. If I understand it correctly, Yahoo is leasing server space from AT&T. That is why the server name includes Yahoo. It still is very confusing, to say the least.
