    http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/2069375/

That was from their poll. (at the time I voted)
    Bibles in Class?

Should Bibles or other religious texts be allowed in public elementary schools?

That's misleading. Neither the article, nor the events, say that Bibles are not allowed in school. What's not allowed is the distribution of Bibles in school.

I think they allow distribution in Brunswick county.

The article does not mention Brunswick County.

However it does mention that distribution is allowed in high schools, just not elementary schools.

The point of my post, though, was that the post by kookookacho was misleading as the Bible is allowed in school, just not allowed to be distributed in elementary schools.

Exactly. Distribution of the Bible or other proselytizing texts is not allowed.

I don't know why I even put their poll on here... I guess for kicks a giggles Because WRAL seems to wonder what people think about bibles in school.

but hey... let's worry about what's misleading.

Their poll asks whether Bibles and other religious texts should be allowed in public schools. I voted yes.

If the poll had asked the question that was addressed by the school system - whether outside groups should be allowed to distribute Bibles in schools - I would have voted No.
The same applies to any other religious texts.

If my child wants to carry his own Bible, and my neighbors child wants to carry his own Koran, I see no problem with that. And if they want to share information and look at each others books outside of class time, I have no problem with that. But I would strenuously object if someone in a saffron robe came in and distributed Hare Krishna reading materials to the children, or even left it on a table for the children to pick up.

I'm surprised Grace hasn't posted on this thread yet. When I saw the title, I could just see the smoke pouring from her ears over this outrage! She's probably busy contacting the media with a list of courthouse employees!

Free speech for me, but none for thee!

Its called Separation Of Church And State. It is constitutional law!!!

Religious materials should not be allowed to be distributed....ever....even in High Schools. This is a very dangerous president if this is allowed....even at the HS level

I firmly believe that people have a right to believe in religion, to talk about it and to practice it. But they do not have a right to thrust religion (especially their religion) down someone else's throat (and this includes children and adults).
I believe parents and teachers have a right to expose children to religion, but they cannot profess selective amnesia about the harm that misused or misinterpreted religiosity can bring about. Children should be exposed to both religion and secularism. They should be exposed to the good and bad sides of both.
Schools and public institutions should allow individuals the right of free religious speech as well as free secular speech. This does not mean, however, that religion should be advocated in the (public) classroom or in official school events. It is one thing to teach about religion (including objective facts about multiple religions and secularism), which is acceptable; it is another thing altogether to proselytize or teach false or skewed propaganda about religion (or lack thereof), which is unacceptable.

Public schools and institutions should NOT directly fund groups or activities whose objective is to proselytize on or propagate religion or secularism.

The bible is a piece of literature. Just like a science book that discusses the big bang theory.
