That is what happend to mine last year in June, right now it gets close to 80 during the day but by morning it's fine.. I'm praying it doesn't freeze up again, I can not turn the heat on, with the pugs here they can't handle the heat..the birds yes..but not the dogs. I wonder if I turn it up higher at night, would that help out at all. I don't have shade on the house much either, and lord knows I can't afford a high bill either. I might have to put something else on the windows if need be. Keep the tips coming! Sheri
Horayyy!!! My air is back on. The capacitor had to be replaced because it was damaged by the extreme heat. The bill was only $130 and I have cool air again. The technician said my thermostat only went to 95 degrees ... but it was hotter than that upstairs so the thermostat was reading OL (Over Limit). It was getting hot!!! I had taken the filters out just to make sure they weren't causing any troubles. The tech put the new ones we'd purchased back in for me. He was very polite & professional. Thanks for recommending Artic Air
Our upstairs unit went out last week also. Chucks was the only one we could get out here to get things taken care of on short notice. It was saying 90 degrees upstairs. We needed freon, so..... It ended up costing us quite a bit, but they are working with us on the payments, so I think that is great.
Ok I just noticed it was getting hot in here. And looked at the controller on the wall................it's blank! No a/c. Would there possibly be like a reset button or something on the unit? At this point and time I can't call and have someone come look at it.
That's what I will be doing today. I've got two glass doors and a big window in my kitchen... and where did they put the thermostat??? In the kitchen.
I like how he explains what he's doing, the cost of what he's doing, why it needs to be done, how to avoid it happening in the future ... alternatives ... I'm one of those who watches and tries to learn when someone is doing something to my property. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend Mike to ANYONE. I trust him.
Chuck's is great like that too. He took me under the house and showed me what and why all the duct work needed to be replaced, and how what was there wasn't up to current codes. My in-laws have used him on our recommendation as well, and needed a substantial amount of work done on their unit. When all was said and done, they relayed what they had done and the price to a family member that used to be in the business, and he said it all sounded on the up and up and for a really good price. So that always makes me feel good about reccomending him.
Mike is very professional, honest and does quality work! He has been working on our unit for a few years. When he first worked on our unit we were facing the cost of replacing it. Mike could have easily told us we just needed a new one. Instead he was able to get it fixed (for a reasonable cost) and in good running condition. He has extened the life of our unit far beyond what we expected ...giving us more time to save for a future replacement. He definitely is looking to do what's best for the customer and not just out to get your $.
For deflecting heat in our house, my mom use to put foil up on the top of the windows, shiney side out. It worked. Think I will be doing it this year.
We have curtains with blackout lining on the front of our house, where we get the most sun. We keep those closed on these hot days.
You all need to go purchase a little 5200 BTU unit for just such emergencies. And in 100+ plus heat, using the word emergency is not far off. You can get a little 5200 BTU unit for as little as $96, they are very light to carry, about 40 pounds and it will cool a large bedroom or small living room. If your central air goes out, you will quickly agree it was the best $100 you ever spent! http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8811931
Up north (new england), central AC in older houses isn't common, and I grew up never having had central air conditioning. We made use of portable window units and our attic fan when it got THAT hot. I remember spending upwards of $500 for a window unit that would cool my entire apt. when I got married. But it would be nice to have a small one that a generator might run in an emergency.
I was fortunate to grow up with AC, born and raised here....I can't imagine it without, my grandmother didnt have it, ever, and she was 92 and died last year. We just got (literally last week) a complete new system throughout....when the heat is like this (100's) we use a window unit upstairs even, it gets pretty hot up there....that keeps the main unit from working so hard.
I've been keeping our unit set around 76 in the daytime, its a programmable thermostat. I keep the blinds closed, lights off, ceiling fans on medium, luckily we have a very well shaded yard.. and knock on wood.. its been running fine through this heat. I'd rather live like a mole in the summer with the lights off and blinds shut to keep it cool in the house.
yes, I do the same thing, especially upstairs. However, we like to be able to hang meat if necessary, so the thermo stays on 70. When people come to the beach house and ask, "what should I bring?" I always tell them if they are cold natured, better pack some long pants. One of my girlfriend brings sweats.
