An organization that helps families find wheelchair vans? I have a friend w/ a special needs child that is wheelchair bound. The mother is really having a hard time carrying him in and out of hte car(he weighs 75 lbs). She has to lift him everywhere. He has CP and Spina bifida along w/ some other things. This is a wonderful woman and her family does quite a bit for the community as far as volunteer work and things go. I told her I would ask around. They found a used van on Craigslist but it was $27K. A church recently raised funds for the child to be able to have communication. But the wheelchair accessible van is going to have to be a must for her. Any suggstions on who she could contact? Or where she could even look for a van that has wheelchair access? I only have kids that use wheelchairs when we have surgeries. I can tell you that just the short amount of time for that is hard. I can not imagine having to do this everyday. Any suggestions or places please do pass it on tome and then I can get the info to her. I greatly appreciate it. Stephanie--mom to 7
Try the Blue Ridge Pharmacy people, they may have some contacts as well. There is also a company off of Capital Blvd./Navahoe Drive area that performed Van conversions for wheelchair lifts etc., if their still in business. Try calling Rex Wellness Center's physical/rehab. therapy division as well. Has she tried the child's doctors for this information? Seems to me that they would have some type of contacts. Good luck.

I could be wrong and I couldnt tell you where it is but isnt there a company that sells wheel chairs somewhere in the vicinity of medicap?For some reason I thought I saw the sign when I was going down 40 one day.Also,I saw on the news a while back where this guy started a company that provided free wheel chairs to people who couldnt afford them.Again,I have no info on him but maybe you could investigate online? I wish you luck and if I find out anymore info I'll pass it on.
You're thinking of Able To Serve. Different type of organization but a great one. I never thought to ask them of who they might know though and I'll do that for her.
