I've been thinking about getting the A+ certification. Can anyone give me tips on which direction to go.

Is formal training/education required to take the test?
I did a web search and found very little, any links?
Anyone have any books they want to sell?
Is it worth it and what does the exam cost?
    etc......

See if you can see this link. http://www.register.prometric.com/ClientInformation.asp
You can find the local test sites. I have gone through prometric a couple times for MS exams. Luckily MS had offers for free second exam takes if you don't pass the first. MS exams are no joke!! If you can't see the link look for the Comp/TIA exams.

There's loads of material you can purchase for studying on your own. That's what I did in addition to taking some classes at Wake Tech. I passed the A+ and the Net+ without trouble. But you can't take it lightly. They're not easy exams by any means.
I may even have all the books that I used although I have moved a couple times since then and it has been almost ten years. I'd be happy to give them to you if you'd like (if I can find them) however you'd probably serve yourself well to get the latest texts available.
    Good luck.
BTW-- Formal training isn't necessary but could be helpful depending on your own study habits. You have to pay to sit for the exam; that's the only "requirement". So it benefits you greatly to ensure you are well prepared as they aren't cheap but less than other certifications out there. You can find practice exams available on the web and included in much of the study material available for purchase.
