Any ideas on media card reader?

I listened to a business partner and bought a Dell computer. It is still under the waranty but is having big problems.

It is running Windows XP, and the only issue I had prior to now was with the MFC printer, which was partly incompatible for some reason. Only the printer function worked for a while. After a few attempts at loading the correct dirvers it no longer prints either.

The first problem with the media card reader came out of the blue. Just did not read any of the drives one day when I went ot load pictures form my digital camera. Called tech support and after restarting, checking and reseating the cables they sent a tech with a replacement.

The new replacement did not work so tech support had HIM reseat the cables again along with the othere checks and it worked finally. A couple of days later it did not work again. Called tech support and went through the whole set of checks in the BIOS, and device managers before reseating the calbes yet again. Nothign worked so they sent out another tech with another reader and a new mother board too. (Cables each time too)

Worked good that day and the next, but a week later when I went to use it again it had died. Sent two messages to tech support to which they say they replied but I got nothing in my e-mail. Called again to go through the same steps and a few new ones with no positive result. This time they had me back up my data and restore the system to the original factory set point. The same checks with the same result followed.

They are supposed to be sending another tech with anothe media reader and mother board, but I do not see it being a solution.

Does anyone have an idea on what may be happening to kill the media card reader (possibly connected to the printer problem?) that would not be corrected by the replacement of the card reader several times or the mother board and the resetting of the operating system to the original settings?

I am leaning toward a new computer at this point, especially since I have all of my files on a back up drive already.

    Thanks.

I've also seen problems with the media card readers that are included in the "multi-function" devices. I would suggest picking up a seperate memory card reader and abandoning the one on the printer.

You should be able to pick one up that reads all the memory cards availalble on the market for $20 or less. I've gotten two from Intrex Computers in Raleigh that have worked fine for years. They have a model that just attaches to an available external USB port, or, if you are feeling adventurous, for a desktop PC they have one that will fit into a standard drive expansion bay.

The media card reader is installed in the computer bay and was part of the original production. Sorry, I was not clear on that.

My older computer also has a media reader and XP but no problems so far. It is an HP.

    Dump the Operating System:mrgreen:
If it is under warranty and built in I would continue to press Dell. Escalate the problem further up the food chain, but if your time is valuable may be easier to get a new box. They have replaced the motherboard, reader, and cables so I am not sure what else is left except a riser possibly.

I plan on taking off to be at home when the tech goes this time just for that reason. I cannot figure out what may be wrong but a new system seems to be the most cost effective solution at this point for all involved, but I wanted to see if there were any other ideas out there.

They use a generic drivers on some card readers. The software is specifying an irq list that doesn't include any interrupts (IO's) that are actually available. Typical for a laptop. The reason the unit works for a couple of days is, they are forcing the issue thru the bios to get the card to work, and then, Windows XP changes it when you request the IRQ/IO with some other piece of equipment.

From your post, I see the MFC printer being the factor but not the fault. Try unloading "all" the software related to the printer. Then reconfigure the card reader and see what happens.

That would have been done when they reset the system to the original factory setpoint wouldn't it? All of the software I had installed was removed and everything was reset to the factory specs. Even that crappy free trial sofware was enabled again. the tech should be here in an hour or so to install the newest card reader and mother board combo so we'll see what all is done then.

Update, new card reader and cable are in but the mother board was DOA. The problem is still there and a new system is being built to replace this one. I should have it in a couple of weeks at most and I will see if this is a larger problem then.

It is a DVD drive that also writes as well as reads. The reference to "Bob" is the trend to outsource the call centers to Pakistan or India where the local workers use an assumed name to sound more local.
