I have a CD drive in my computer. I removed it to install a burner instead but when I power the computer up, it does not "see" it. I have opened the device manager and it does not "exist" according to the list. It has power to it (tray comes out and will receive a CD and act like it is playing it) but it is nowhere to be found anywhere in the computer. Looking in "My Computer" the device does not exist, either. It shows the hard drive, floppy drive (yes the computer is old) and the control panel but no CD drive. I have put the old CD drive back in and it operates fine.

the question: Why does the computer not recognize the drive?

What Operating System are you running?

If you are running a current OS, 2000 or XP, take a look at the Device Manager.

Let us know which OS you are running and we'll try to assist further.

you should have had a jumper on the back that might have to be changed, [IMG]
look on the burner itself or any documentation on what it should be set to.

Check the IDE cable. It may be pluged into the CD backwards. The red line on the cable always goes closest to the power plug.

Secondly, if it's an older machine, and you are using the old IDE cable that was plugged into your old CD it may not be a compatable pin count. If the drive came with a new cable use it. Remember that the red wire is the control on which direction the cable is pluged to the motherboard. When you pull the old one, note which side the red line is on and match it when plugging the new one in.

you try going to the manufacturer's website and downloading the drivers for it?
