I give up ... we've tried to get fescue to grow in our yard for a couple of years - but I give up. Too many water restrictions. I'd like to put down centipede sod. What are the best prices you've found on centipede sod? To save a few buck I'm hoping I can put it down myself.
If you have the chance, you might want to check out the Southen Ideal Home Show. Last day is tomorrow (Sunday). They had a number of vendors there doing sod of various types. You can check the Exhibitor listing at their website also: http://www.southernshows.com/hsr/
We've always had great luck with Super Sod at the State Farmer's Market. They have great prices, and are very helpful. Give them a try!
Did you try J&J on Matthews Road? No idea of their prices but they have a SIGN w/ Phone ### on Raleigh Road at Sonny Road (Which dead ends in to Matthews Rd) J&J are brothers James & Jason Barbour - Cleveland natives, Big time Farmers from way-way back.
That's who we got ours from a couple of years ago. Great people! I can't remember what we paid for it though....my memory is shot....getting too old I guess.
Have you considered zoysia? It's drought tolerant and needs less mowing. We bought our first pallets of emerald zoysia from a place out near New Bern about five years ago. They delivered with a minimum # of pallets. About two summers ago we bought from a company near Dunn. We picked it up to save $ and I think had to order a min. of 3 pallets. Wral had this article today about a new program being offered in Cary. I wish Johnston co. had the same deal.
zoysia we have some of this... I think. My Dad plugged it years ago - it's like "Carpet grass", it keep spreading and will choke out weeds and junk grass. Very low growing & flat.
I think the article about the man in Cary is incorrect. Centipede grass is a warm season grass. It's kind of stupid to pay a homeowner to replace a warm season grass with another warm season grass. What's nice about all the warm season type grass is that they send runners and spread out. It chokes out weeds and other type of grass. Good luck in your search for centipede.
Make sure your neighbors don't have issues with Centipede. We planted it before we had any neighbors and it has already spread to one neighbors property. P.S. it turns brown during the winter months, but overall I am very happy with it.
That's what we have too and it has done well. Not a real fast-growing grass (as in spreading and taking over the yard) but we like it!
$500 of Zoysia might be enough to cover the floor of my master bathroom, that is really a drop in the bucket for such expensive grass. It can also take up to 10 years to spread over your entire lawn (which is why it is so expensive) and it will not grow or turn green in any kind of shade. FYI.
We didn't pay anywhere near that for ours! Dh bought a few flats and plugged them. Then when he gets a good patch going, he takes some plugs and puts throughout the yard.....eventually he'll get'er done! But we don't have a hugh front yard - now the back is a different story............ He's recently started pluggin the back also. :?
