Last night my computer was working fine, this morning it had shut off by itself. I tried to turn it on, everytime I do, it comes on, you hear the fan running loudly, then it turns off. I am by no means qualified to fix it, but I opened it up. It was dusty as heck. I vaccumed it out. It didn't seem to hurt or help it. What do ya'll think is wrong.

My wife The GEEK said it probably is your powersupply, of course she also said if it is over 4 years old you probably need a new PC.

All right she is the "GEEK" in my family, but she manages IT for over 100 computers so she would probably go crazy if she followed your advise.8)

Okay, I replaced the power supply and it still does the same thing. Could it be the fan?

First: Unplug everything from the power supply except the motherboard. (CD/DVD-Rom, floppy drive, HDD, media card readers) Also disconnect the HDD, CD-Rom, and/or floppy drive cables connecting them to the MB.

Unplug all external devices (including the keyboard). Leave the monitor connected so you can see what might be happening. If it starts to POST (power-on self test), slowly start connecting devices until you find the culprit.

If that doesn't work, remove the RAM and power on. Does it beep at you, or behave differently? If not, reinsert the RAM and try to power on again.

Lastly, you can try removing and reseating the processor, but that is crazy tricky and could really mess up your day.

Still no luck? You've probably got a bad motherboard (although there is a small chance it is the processor.)

Lester, I don't know how to do all that. I'm afraid of really messing it up, do you work on computers?

How did you replace the power supply?

I bought one at Best Buy, I put it in by removing one connection at the time and reconnecting it with the new one. I think I had it right, I'm fairly good at fixing simple things. Why do you ask?

Just curious, based on your previous statement.
