Before change out the mobo, maybe someone has seen this before... I have a D510 Latitude and intermittently it locks up, showing Dell's version of the BSD stating that "The module you have inserted into the D-Bay is incompatible and should be removed." The only choice I have "Enter to continue or ESC". I have not inserted anything into the docking bay, so I escape out. Later (1-5 minutes), the same screen comes up, but it is all scrambled and I cannot press anything to return to Windows (Yes, it's an XP machine). I have to press and hold the power button until it shuts down. Then, trying to boot the system, it doesn't get past the POST and shuts down. I've tried removing all RAM and peripherals to no avail. Ideas?
Does this happen with the battery removed and on A/C power only. Give that a try and let me know. That model has a battery recall. Go to the Dell site and check your battery serial number against the recall list.
The last part of your explanation said it won't get past the post. But the first part said itntermittant lock ups. If you can get to windows load this Dell Health Scan software and run it. http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=25&fileid=195020 This is a D bay firmware fix. It may show up as your problem if you can run the health check. http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=2&libid=31&fileid=100938 Read this page carefully and then print it. Before you load the firmware fix above. http://ftp.us.dell.com/firmware/FX2_A04.TXT I specialize in laptop repairs. If you get to the point where you give up, I can give you a quote on a diagnostic and repair. Just PM me.
Thanks Thanks, I'll try these and let you know. To clarify, the POST (or not passing POST) only happens after the lockup. After waiting about 5-10 minutes, then it'll pass POST and boot to windows. Stay tuned. Jason
I know you said you removed all peripherals but lets try 1 more thing before you go to any expense. Lets remove the drive in the D Bay and see what happens. The "D" bay is not the "Docking" bay, it's the module slot your CD is in. Turn the PC off. On the bottom right corner of your CD drive is a latch. Press (push in) the device latch release so that the latch release pops out. Pull the CD Drive by the latch release to remove the device from the module bay. Try a reboot and run multiple programs to see if it locks up.
