This morning, I had a dialog box that said "Files necessary for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized files." What does that mean? It said to put my Windows Service Pack 2 CD in the drive. I don't think I have a SP2 CD, I think I got it in an online update. So I rebooted, went to the Help and Support Center, and since I'm such a tech-no-not I don't know what to do next. System restore? Windows update? Tools? Help!
I'm using AVG free virus protection, and I just ran a scan of my whole systems. It found 0 infections and 0 spyware. Does that mean everything is OK? Should I go ahead and update Windows?
Hi...when this first occured (when you got that initial error message), was this during the computer startup, or, had it been running a while and you got that message?
It had been on but not used (except for automatic update stuff) overnight. The message was on the screen when I first came to use it this morning.
This may have been a result of the Microsoft automatic update - especially if your settings are configured to have it download and install the updates automatically. If you have rebooted the PC and haven't had this error repeated, you should probably be fine.
Thank you! It seems to be working fine, and I have not received that error message again, so I guess I won't worry about it. Thanks!
You did not say which O/S your using so I'm guessing XP? Although your Windows is running fine the WFP (Windows File Protection) may be running continuosly in the background. This leads to a more complicated problem when it trys to update the next time. It's best to resolve the problem now and not take the "see what happens" route. This describes the Windows File Protection process: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/222193 You can download the SP2 from here as a file and create a CD. SP2 It's not a difficult task to run a file check but it is confusing. If your comfortable in trying, give this a run: At a command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER. You are prompted to insert the Windows XP SP2 CD. Make sure you made a good CD from the download before trying this.
