First question - what version of Windows are you running? 2000 or XP and what service pack is installed?

You can normally find this in either version by RIGHT clicking on the My Computer icon on the desktop, and selecting Properties. The General tab will list the OS name and version, plus service pack installed.

Wow!!! I'm impressed! You went out and found the answers you needed and even to the point of learning BIOS Setup. Good for you!!

Do the drives show in Windows Explorer. (on the left side at the bottom)?

    If not:
I'm on my Pista PC right now (Vista) so not sure of the step by step....

... but, go to the control panel and click on hardware or add new hardware or search for new hardware. The objective is to get it to look for new hardware, ignore and cancel everything other than the drives that it finds. If it finds the drives let it install them.

Let me know what you find, or you can PM me and I'll help by phone. Anyone who did their research like you did, deserves free help!

OK, I'm back at my Win 2K PC ...Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh:lol::lol: Software I control!!

Your looking for "Add Remove Hardware"
    Click next, then Add/Troubleshoot.
If it does not find the CD Drive it will give you a list of items it found. Scroll down to the CD Drive and then click on it, then click next.

Uninstall (Add / Remove Programs) all software related to the CD or DVD drives. Like Roxio or Nero etc.. (burning or dvd software). ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE DISKS TO LOAD IT BACK!

If while uninstalling, it says it has files that may be used by other programs delete them anyway. If it asks you to reboot don't reboot. Uninstall all the associated programs before proceeding. Now go to the device manager and remove the drives again. Turn the PC off (do a shut down).

Open the PC case. Look at the back of the drives. Small white power plugs in the back of the drives (on the right side).... unplug them from the drive. It may seem like they wont come out. Wiggle them left and right. Try not go up and down. Point them away from any metal and let them hang there.

With the case open, boot the PC and let it go to windows. Let it completely load and you have no hard drive activity. Turn the PC off again. (do a shut down).

Plug the drives back in. With the case open, boot the PC and let it go to windows again. It should recognize the drives and load the drivers.

Go to Windows explorer and see if they show up in the left side column at the bottom. If yes, slide a music cd in them to see if they work. If yes reload your burning or DVD software.

Now take a chicken put it in a bag, go outside and wave it over your head and .............. no wait ...... that's another post response:lol::lol:
