My washing machine bit the dust last night. I need to buy a new one right away. I'd like to buy a front load, full size, stackable washer & dryer. Where have you seen the best deals? What is the best brand for the money?

There was just something on the news about the front load washers, towels and stuff having a mold/mildew smell that couldn't be gotten out. They said that the front load washers have a bad problem with the rubber gasket just inside the door getting moldy & mildewy and not being able to be cleaned well enough. My neighbor has one, and she actually complained of the very same thing months ago.

I have had my front load for almost a year and I have to agree. Every time a load finishes I jump to either open the door or get them out. I love the look of the front load but I wish I would have bought a top load. My 2 cents!

I agree. Stay away from the front loader. Though we love it, the front ring inside is the huge problem. Mildew..Mold. though my clothes don't have that smell. We've had ours for about a year. Retrospect, we should have bought one of the newer top loaders....cheaper, very efficient and cleans just as well. Shop around for sure. We priced shop and for the most part, prices were about the same everywhere...expensive--LOL. We hadn't bought a new one for 10 years so talk about sticker shock.

    Good luck,

    Hi Melynda,

We have a top load - 15 year old Whirlpool and works beautifully- so no advice on make or model.

I do, however, recommend that you check out Garner TV and Appliance. We have purchased our fridge, dishwasher and microwave from them and always found very good deals. The customer service was excellent and the prices were very competitive. Mike (don't know last name) sold us the fridge so ask for him if you go there.

Also check Craigslist. I bought a great dryer on there for $100 a few months ago. It was only 2 years old and it is FANCY! It does more than my other dryer ever dreamed of doing.

I see washers on there all the time. Good luck! It's a real downer when the washer or dryer quits and you suddenly have that expense.

I second Garner TV & Appliance. They sometimes have amazing scratch and dent deals!

Thanks for all of your suggestions!!! I initially tried talking hubby into a set I saw on CraigsList ... but he wanted to be safe and go the route of a store with a warranty. While talking with a neighbor Friday about the need to purchase a washer & dryer this weekend I learned they were in the same boat as we were. We decided to do a little power shopping together to see what kind of deals we could get if the salesperson knew they were going to sell 2 washers & 2 dryers. The best deal we found was at HHGregg. I'm a little worried after reading some of your comments about Front Load washers ... because that's what we ended up buying. I'm hoping that if I'm extra diligent about using the right type & amount of detergent, running the cleaning cycle a couple of times per month, drying the inside of the boot in the door when I'm not using the washer, & leaving the door slightly ajar so the inside can dry ... that hopefully I won't run into any troubles.

My mom has a front loader and it's a Maytag, and she loves it..never had a problem with it at all. I have found when she washes my daughter clothes from her staying over there some nights that they smell better and are much cleaner then my top load. I used to sell Appl. back in the day and I recommend the front loader either brand of Whirlpool or Maytag.
I'm not a big fan of GE, but not sure how much they have changed in 10 years.

I know people who have had success with homemade laundry powder in an HE washer (AND a reg for that matter).

The recipe for the laundry soap is as follows.

1 c. shredded or grated Fels Naptha - usually found in the laundry aisle.
(use the food proc. to shred - usually found in the laundry aisle.)

1/2 c. super washing soda (Arm and Hammer but NOT to be confused with baking soda!!) This can be tricky to find but some grocery stores carry it. A & H toll free locator number is 1-800-524-1328.

1/2 c. borax (Borateem avail in laundry deterg. aisle.)

    Use 1 TB per wash.

The ones we bought are Whirlpool. I heard good things about LG ... but was a little worried about having them serviced if anything went wrong. So far I love the new washer & dryer. Super quite, quicker than the old ones, hold more clothes than the old ones & does a lot better job cleaning my clothes. The dryer has some type of steam feature on it ... I haven't tried that out yet. Looks easier than ironing though :)

I have recently replaced my old ~20 yrs Kenmore Washer (Top Load) with another Kenmore from Searrs. The new one works well, just miss my old machine in some way... Sears deliver and set it up and took the old one with a small fees, most of the time, they re-imburse the fees with some kind of mail in discount. I got mine back in a check.
