I need some help getting my wife's computer connected to our ehternet router. The router isn't hooked up to the internet yet, but I don't think that should matter.

Anyway, the computer is a Dell running XP. The Ethernet port on the PC is the one on the motherboard - I didn't add a card. I have checked the Ethernet adapter under the Device Manager and it says it is working properly and it is in use. I have checked the TCP/IP settings and they are correct as well - it is set to obtain both the IP Address and the DNS automatically.

I have also made sure that the broadband router is working as well. It is a D-Link DI-604 Broadband Router. I have a wireless network hooked up to it and was able to log onto it via a laptop and confirm that it is working properly as well - its set to assigning IP addresses automatically and all that.

XP just keeps telling me that the cable is unplugged. I've replaced the cable with one that I know was working and it still does not connect.

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe I should try installing a standalone ethernet card.

    Thanks

Click on "Start" -"Help"- "Networking & the Web" - "Home & Small Office Networking" - "NetworkSetup Wizzard"

    Go thru the help process.

Have you gotten your issue resolved?

If not, try booting the system in "Safe Mode with Networking" and see if you can connect to the internet while there.

If you dont know how to make it go into safe mode here is the way:

    Restart your PC

Right after your PC logo screen starts pressing the F8 key and that will pull up a menu. If you miss time it the system will boot normally and you have to try again.

    Select safe mode with networking.

Sometime Windows files are corrupted in normal mode and prevent system functionability. If it works in safe mode and not in normal mode then you know you have a Windows issue and not a network card issue.

i haven't come back to this thread in a while, but I still can't get this thing to work. I haven't tried starting in safemode yet - I'll try that as soon as I can.

I was fooling around with it the other day and tried to get my work laptop to connect to the router (windows xp again) through the ethernet plug - no luck. I get pretty much the same thing going on there that I did with the PC. Funny thing, though is that it works fine at work. I can also connect to the home network on the laptop through the wireless connection.

This morning I tried one more time with the PC. This time I tried forcing the IP address by setting it and giving it the subnet mask and the default gateway of the router. It would actually connect to the router for just a few seconds but then it would cut out again. This is really frustrating.

Delete the network on the problem pc. Reboot and create a new network. Soundes like you've made changes that you've forgotten you changed with the changes. Get my drift, I've been there done that.

Starting with a new network brings everything back to home again and lets windows search again.

it looks like my router may be hosed for some reason. I took the dang thing to work today and no matter what computer I hook it up to, the same thing happens. So, I'll be buying a new one and see if it fixes the problem.

The odd thing is that the wireless AP can communicate with it and it will serve up IP addresses through that but it just won't communicate directly to a PC through a wired connection.
