How do I capture or copy onscreen dialog boxes?

Years ago when I used a Mac, my Mac had a feature (I think it was called "Snapshot") where I could take a picture (and it saved as a jpeg) of anything that was on desktop or open on my screen. Is it possible to do something like this with a PC using Windows XP?

Let's say I'm designing a handout for a class and want to give step-by-step instructions on how to save a picture to the My Pictures folder. I would also like to include a graphic of the dialog box that appears on screen showing that it is being saved in the My Pictures folder, where to type in the picture (or file) name, and the Save button, etc.

Some online tutorials have graphics they use, but many are copyrighted and don't illustrate the exact thing that I want.

Do you have any suggestions for me? Thanks in advance for your help and ideas.

Hold the shift button and then the "Print Screen" button. Then just paste it within any document such as Word.

of course you can do a simple hit Alt and PrintScreen and capture to your windows clipboard and then paste into anything but one of the best screen capture utilities I have ever used is a product called "SnagIt" http://www.techsmith.com/snagit.asp This product allows you to capture screens/objects/ scrolling screens/menus about anything you want. plus the editor is a very nice simple graphics editor where you can add highlighting/arrows/text

How come you guys use the "alt" and "shift" key? Just hitting "prt scr" does the job?

I use the Alt-"PrtScr" or whatever.

My boss is big on some program "PrintKey" for showing me how to work software by email. Getting screenshots. I haven't tried it yet. Its freeware.
