on technical needs and advice? The few times I have been to Best Buy....They are lined almost to the door for the geek squad. It amazes me. People save your freaking money. Ask here.

Only thing I can honestly see letting them do straight out of the box is allowing them to add more memory as I can honestly see a manfacturor claiming a voided warranty if not done but these yahoos.

they are probably lined up there because the Geek Squad handles the warranty issues with the computers, cameras, etc and also the Black Tie Guarantee which is something i get on everything i buy there. Also if they mess up your equipment you have recourse for recovery instead of just being out of luck if someone does it on the side. Sometimes a guarantee is worth paying a little more for IMHO and that is a lesson i learned the hard way. Had a guy say he could fix my computer that was running slow about 10 years ago and when he brought it back after forever of me asking for it he had crashed my hard drive and guess what, i was just out of luck.

Not true. Warranty is ONLY voided if taped and glued areas are opened. Memory does not fall into that category. Just an FYI.

You can get the same guarantee from Walmart. Also from CompUSA. I am just getting people to think before they act. Immediate gratification again. Just pick up a phone. Did you know Geek Squad ONLY uses bootable DVD's and CD's to run repairs that are free for you to download? I happen to have stumbled upon one of these. They left one in a laptop they could not fix. I fixed it and kept the media. lol.

Its your money Kaci. You can do as you please with it. Just offereing advice to those who did not purchase the extended warranty. This community is loaded with people like me. Just be careful. It's like going to Jiffy lube for a oil change. Next thing you know your rear seal is gone, your shocks are shot, and by god your motor has issues. Just be careful.

i really don't see how you can compare the folks that work at Walmart selling computers to the guys that work on them for a living at Best Buy but hey, to each his own. Spend a little more up front (but with their sales you can easily save up front too) and save more in the long run is the way i look at it. i happen to know a couple of the guys that work there and they are extremely knowledgable and i have never had a problem with them. You may be fortunate enough to be tech savvy enough to do your own repairs but there are a lot of folks like me that are clueless when it comes to repairing a computer:cheers:

I'm not comparing. The people who sell you the machine at both places are simply in sales. I was speaking in reference to the additional warranties purchased. I bought a 3 year replacement for my wifes laptop at walmart. I knoew I would rebuild it as soon as I got it home. But hardware wise....Replacement plan. No questions asked.

I am not trying to put down Geek Squad. At all. Save your money is what I am saying. No more no less. Me I do this stuff for fun. I drive them for a living. Could a saved you some money chic.:jester:

If you have a manufacturers warranty ... use it!!! :)

If you're buying a retail "extended" warranty, you're paying way too much!! Other than Walmart, the price you pay for the extended warranty is way more than any projected repairs when you compare life cycle costing against total replacement cost. And unless you're buying the "any damage" clause, which is very costly, you wasted your money. The most common laptop repairs are physical damage repairs and not covered by the standard extended warranty.

Stay with the authorized dealers during the 1 year manf. warranty. Going to the Geeks after the manf. warranty is a crazy waste of money. There are reputable shops in this area who are much cheaper and just as reliable.

DIY it with help in this forum if you have lots of time to learn and don't care if a mistake makes it worse.:jester:
