Is there ever a day without a gremlin?

OK, first I have to say, with a knock on wood, that I am very fortunate not to have any major problems. However, there seems to be a new ugly little gremlin that always wants to raise its head.

So today I went to scan a page (HP officejet 7410 all in one) when I hit scan to hp image zone (like usual) I got a script error that says - line 21, char 2, error object doesnt aupport this property or method, code 0, url - file://C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Skins\hp1\sc\scan.htm. If I click OK twice, it eventually lets me scan and seems OK.

I have checked the HP site and can not locate a script error that is at all similar to this one?

I am on xp pro and do use norton.

I have tried to turn norton off, just to test and I still get it. I remember a similar script error when I installed Norton internet security (which I never got to work, but it is still on my system as it became such an ordeal with symantec support I said F,IT) when I reboot the machine I still always get NIS trying to load - I always have to x out and then say yes quit, (it is still trying to load into configuration) if I click continue config on the NIS I also get a script error that is laid out in the same fashion but the actual error relates to NIS. I have since just loaded standard NAV and it works fine.

One question, is can I remove the NIS program from add/remove w/o interfering with the NAV program components therefore causing more problems?

I have not changed anything since I last used the scanner or printer, a couple of days ago...........

    any thoughts?

    Thanks - Traveler

If you can find the script file it is using for this modify the script to say "On error resume next". Since you are able to print anyway. This will cause the script file not to show the error in that perticular line. The important thing to know if its written in VBScript or Jscript. But the text above should fix that issue either way.

There is currently no HP solution for the SCAN.HTM error. It's an "all in one" nightmare instance. Avoid the error by disabling the "Show Preview" feature that uses the SCAN.HTM file. This change must be made in both the Scan Picture settings and the Scan Document settings. This means your going to have to do full scans for a preview from now on. I had one customer set his DPI to very low for his preview and it goes quicker. Then he pumps it up for the final scan. A pain, but it saves time.

Changing the Scan Document preview settings:

    Open the HP Director.
Click Settings and then click Scan Document Settings.
    Click the Preferences tab.
Remove the check from Show Preview.

Changing the Scan Picture preview settings:

    Open the HP Director.
Click Settings and then click Scan Picture Settings.
    Click the Preferences tab.
Remove the check from Show Preview.

Symantec support is the worst in the whole industry, strange when they are the biggest. To answer the question on removing the NIS and not the NAV; it's a real task and your probably going to have the same script problem because you'll never get to all the registry entries and shared files for a complete removal. Check your "add/remove" programs and see if they were installed seperately and not NSW(Norton System Works). If so, you may have a good chance of a complete removal of just NIS through the Windows uninstall. The all time best software Symantec ever wrote is the "Rnis.exe removal tool to uninstall NIS" Check their site for a copy and explanation.

Thanks for the HP info, I actually decided to try the classic move of trying a system restore and I picked a date that I knew it had worked - after all processed I realized I had removed 'office calendar' and a game – removing those must have caused the error. B/C after the restore no more script error.

But I am keeping these notes JIC (JustInCase)!

Yes, Symantec is the worst for support and program upgrade problems. I did an upgrade on a friends NIS this weekend - what a pain, ended up having to uninstalled/reinstall NIS and during that process I did find the removal/reg clean tools on the syman site and all worked fine – it was just a VERY long process.

During that process I thought ‘viola’ this is the fix to my problem – but alas I have decided just to remove NIS and keep NAV instead, therefore the ? about taking NIS off w/o disturbing NAV.

Mine was loaded separately - b/c I installed NIS got the run around, needed to remove other progs - ACT, winfax, etc -this was b4 they had the handy dandy remove/clean up tools. Anyway I got so pived that I just bought NAV and just have been dealing with the NIS prompt each time I restart.

So hopefully - now that I have received the 'final answer' from the great ddrdan - I will get rid of that GREMLIN this weekend, don't need all the extra NIS stuff anyway!

ddrdan - thanks for letting me know I should be able to get rid of one w/o screwing up the other!

    Have a great weekend!
